Position Overview

Supporting the dyad relationship of the Division’s President and Chief Medical Officer (CMO), this position provides financial, operational, and strategic oversight for the Division. The Division CFO is responsible for the financial operations within the Division, including but not limited to monthly close, forecasting, budgeting, performance management, capital management, and business cases for growth and large capital projects. This position provides administrative leadership and direction to the finance operations and business entities of the Division’s hospitals, ambulatory care centers, and medical foundations.

The Division CFO ensures cost-effective services are provided to the communities within the Division. They exercise the necessary and appropriate authority and accountability for the administration and long-term planning of the hospitals and other associated health services business units. The CFO provides direction to the Division’s hospitals, ambulatory care centers, and medical foundations in adhering to system-level standards and maintaining effective employee, medical staff, community, and Board relations. Additionally, they promote positive community contacts and relationships. This position reports directly to the VP Operations CFO, with a dotted line to the Division President.

Education

Job Description:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, or Accounting required.
  • Master’s degree in Business Administration (MBA) or Hospital/Health Care Administration (MHA) preferred.
  • CPA preferred.

Experience

  • Expertise in healthcare administration with progressively responsible management experience (typically 5-7 years), including senior roles in complex multi-facility environments.
  • Strong finance experience in large, complex healthcare organizations.
  • Executive-level experience in a multi-facility/matrix management healthcare system is helpful.
  • Proven competence and success in financial operations, new business planning, development, implementation, and management; board and physician relations; and management development.
  • Demonstrated experience (generally 4-6 years) leading staff represented by organized labor unions.
  • Previous experience in healthcare service line management is desired.
  • Experience demonstrating an effective/proactive employee relations philosophy is required.
  • Demonstrated track record of developing and maintaining working partnerships with physicians.

Knowledge

  • In-depth working knowledge of healthcare administration, finance, operations, and departments, with a strong emphasis on financial management, strategic planning, physician relations, patient care, quality assessment and improvement, risk management, and human resource management.
  • Proven business acumen and entrepreneurial risk-taking ability with a proactive attitude and demonstrated creativity in problem-solving.
  • Solid working knowledge of applicable laws and operating guidelines.
  • Firm understanding of the trends and issues affecting the healthcare industry, including managed care, reimbursement, clinical integration, and quality outcomes.
  • Solid understanding of hospital compliance regulations and laws, including but not limited to federal and state wage and hour laws/regulations, The Joint Commission (TJC), CMS and related accreditation standards, California Business & Professions Code, and CA Code of Regulations (Title 22).
  • Understanding of and experience with Lean or other process improvement philosophies and methodologies is desired.

  • Effective team leader and member skills with a bias toward timely and appropriate action.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, including written, verbal, and public speaking.
  • Proven ability to explain complex medical/clinical information in lay terms.
  • Excellent customer service orientation with an emphasis on continuous quality improvement.

Pay Range is $229.87 to $311.00 / hour

The salary range for this role may vary above or below the posted range as determined by location. This range has not been adjusted for any specific geographic differential applicable by area where the position may be filled. Compensation takes into account several factors including but not limited to a candidate’s experience, education, skills, licensure and certifications, department equity, training and organizational needs. Base pay is just one piece of the total rewards program offered by Sutter Health. Eligible roles also qualify for a comprehensive benefits package.
