Job Description Summary:

The George Washington University offers a comprehensive, NCAA Division I athletics program featuring 400 student-athletes across 20 varsity sports. The Deputy Athletics Director is directly responsible for Athletics’ external operations and strategic initiatives, including: fundraising, partnerships, ticket sales, marketing, communications, branding, creative video, graphic design, digital media, and campus and community engagement. The position reports directly to the Director of Athletics and serves on the Athletics Leadership Team, the department’s senior leadership responsible for strategic implementation and resource allocation. Supervision of select sports programs as assigned.

Revenue Generation

Additional Job Duties Include:

  • Lead the department’s revenue generation efforts through all channels, including fundraising, partnerships, ticket sales, licensing, merchandising, etc.
  • Partner with the Director of Athletics and Executive Director of Development for Athletics to establish annual and long-term goals in support of the department’s strategic initiatives and fundraising priorities; help coordinate and implement comprehensive fundraising programs and activities that support the goals of the department; help determine and monitor key performance metrics and benchmarks to assess performance and measure success; provide leadership and support for annual giving program and athletic letter winners organizations, including coordination of volunteer leadership capable of actively supporting the department’s goals through fundraising, consultation and advocacy.
  • In partnership with and under the direction of Development and Alumni Relations, manage a portfolio of prospects, donors and partners by cultivating, soliciting and stewarding major gifts and partnerships from individuals, foundations and corporations, as assigned and requested.
  • Work collaboratively with GW Development and Alumni Relations to coordinate contacts and solicitation strategies.
  • Oversee the department’s basketball ticket sales strategies for season, group and single game sales.
  • Oversee the department’s relationship with its third-party multimedia rights partner to cultivate, solicit and steward corporate partners; ensure successful partnership sales, activations and fulfillment.

Strategic Communications, Marketing And Branding

  • Oversee the department’s strategic communications to maximize visibility for GW Athletics and its sports programs, including digital and social media, email and direct mail, press releases, etc.
  • Oversee all marketing and promotional initiatives and campaigns to inform and attract target audiences.
  • Oversee digital and linear broadcasts and related content and in-venue presentations for all games and special events.
  • Steward the GW Athletics brand; maintain brand standards for all design, video, social, physical and other brand applications; serve as the department’s final approval of usage.

Student-Athlete Compensation

  • Participate in the development and implementation of strategies to help GW student-athletes maximize their compensation opportunities.
  • Work collaboratively with the GW Basketball General Manager as a liaison to collectives, third-party entities, corporate and community partners that support GW student-athletes.

Leadership & Administrative

  • Lead, manage and coordinate all Athletics external operations staff.
  • Supervise coaches and the day-to-day management of assigned varsity teams.
  • Plan, develop, administer and evaluate areas of responsibility, and conduct regular evaluations of personnel.
  • Represent GW Athletics on internal and external committees and campus and community events.
  • Conduct all duties in accordance with applicable laws, policies and procedures, including: George Washington University, GW Athletics, NCAA , and Atlantic 10.

Performs other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.

Minimum Qualifications

Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 10 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master’s degree in a relevant area of study plus 8 years of relevant professional experience. Relevant experience must include at least 2 years of senior management level experience. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Additional Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree, JD or PhD preferred.
  • Five (5)+ years of demonstrated success in revenue generation, fundraising, marketing, sales or related fields, preferably in a collegiate or professional athletics setting.
  • Demonstrated managerial experience.
  • Demonstrated success in major gift fundraising, annual giving programs or related philanthropic experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated progressive leadership roles in intercollegiate athletics preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to productively engage with diverse audiences including athletics administrators , coaches, student-athletes, boosters, faculty and institutional staff, conference and NCAA personnel.
  • Demonstrated ability to problem-solve and exercise sound judgment in complex environments.
  • A commitment to compliance with NCAA rules and regulations.
  • A commitment to the academic success, personal development and overall wellbeing of student-athletes. A commitment to integrity, diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to effectively balance multiple initiatives.

Hiring Range $138,128.76 - $240,315.85
