About The Job

A nonprofit organization with a $250M+ budget seeks a Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to lead the financial strategy and systems for the organization and its affiliates. This role serves as a key strategic partner to the CEO and Board on all fiscal matters, guiding and shaping the organization's financial planning, strategic growth opportunities, cash management, banking, financial controls, and accounting. The CFO collaborates closely with the senior leadership team, including the Chief Program Officer, Chief Compliance Officer, and Chief Human Resources Officer, to develop and advance effective systems and strategic initiatives. The CFO provides leadership for the organization's financial health while ensuring alignment with its mission and goals.

Key/Essential Functions & Responsibilities

Strategy, Planning, and Innovation

  • Partner with the CEO and Executive Leadership Team to assess organizational performance against the annual budget and long-term strategy; provide recommendations on financial strategy and operations based on projections, cost analysis, and revenue/expense evaluations.
  • Oversee long-term budgetary planning and cost management to align with the organization’s strategic goals.
  • Identify creative and sustainable new funding streams to strengthen the organization’s overall financial position.
  • Facilitate cross-departmental collaboration to ensure all financial solutions support program and service delivery needs.
  • Report to the CEO and Board of Directors on the organization’s financial position and opportunities; prepare reports and develop tools to provide critical financial and operational insights.

Financial Management and Systems

  • Develop and refine financial systems, policies, and procedures to increase operational efficiencies.
  • Oversee the administration of all funding sources, including government grants, institutional funding, and individual donor support, through accurate and detailed record-keeping and reporting.
  • Maintain strong communication with funders to optimize reimbursement rates and ensure timely payments.
  • Optimize the management of lines of credit and banking relationships; implement strategies to improve cash flow positions.

Organizational Leadership, Management, and Culture Building

  • Lead, coach, and mentor a high-performing team of accounting and finance professionals.
  • Contribute to building and maintaining a culture of collaboration, respect, and accountability.
  • Ensure clear communication with the Board, staff, and stakeholders to foster transparency, accountability, and excellence.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

  • 15+ years of progressive finance experience, including significant leadership in managing large teams.
  • CPA/CGMA credentials preferred or commensurate experience demonstrating strategic and financial expertise.
  • Proven experience in financial leadership within a large, complex organization.
  • Commitment to serving mission-driven organizations.
  • Strong collaborative skills, with a proven ability to build cross-functional relationships.
  • Experience managing geographically dispersed teams.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to engage diverse audiences.
  • Strategic, creative, and analytical thinker with a proven ability to grow innovative programs.

Preferred Qualification Requirements

  • Experience leading in a multi-site, geographically dispersed nonprofit.
  • Experience managing operations in multiple states.
  • Experience with mergers and acquisitions.
  • Knowledge of real estate management.
