Summary

The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) serves as a key strategic partner to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and executive leadership team, responsible for overseeing all financial aspects of the organization. This leader will guide financial strategy, ensure fiscal sustainability, and promote innovation and operational efficiency across the organization’s human services and healthcare programs. The CFO provides visionary financial leadership, upholds financial integrity, and supports mission-aligned growth in a dynamic, compliance-driven environment. At a time when the organization is seeing tremendous growth and development, the CFO will be a key team member in developing impactful service models to meet community needs and promote sustainable and measurable community impact.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Strategic Leadership and Financial Planning

Serve as a strategic advisor to the CEO and Board of Directors on financial matters, business modeling, and risk management.
Lead the development of short- and long-term financial plans aligned with the organization’s mission and strategic priorities.
Promote innovation and sustainability in financial practices and funding models.

Financial Management and Reporting

Oversee accounting, budgeting, forecasting, cash flow, and investment strategies.
Ensure timely and accurate financial reports, dashboards, and analyses for internal and external stakeholders.
Develop, implement, manage, and maintain billing infrastructure and all billing activities.
Manage the annual audit process and ensure compliance with GAAP, IRS regulations, contract requirements, and nonprofit reporting requirements (e.g., 990 filings).

Operational and Programmatic Support

Partner with program and operational leaders to evaluate financial performance and drive data-informed decision-making.
Develop cost allocation models and program budgeting tools.
Optimize financial systems, processes, and controls to support organizational effectiveness.
Support program operations in development of the fiscal infrastructure for new programs and services.

Information Technology Oversight

Provide strategic oversight of IT systems and infrastructure to ensure secure, reliable, and scalable technology solutions.
Collaborate with IT leadership and vendors to support digital transformation, cybersecurity, data integration, and technology planning.
Align IT investments with organizational needs, efficiency goals, and regulatory compliance.

Facilities Management Oversight

Oversee facility operations, lease agreements, capital improvements, and maintenance for all sites.
Ensure physical environments support safety, accessibility, regulatory compliance, and program delivery.
Lead long-term facilities planning in alignment with organizational growth and service expansion.

Risk Management and Insurance

· Provide leadership within the organization’s enterprise risk management strategy, ensuring identification, evaluation, and mitigation of financial, operational, legal, and compliance risks.

· Oversee all organizational insurance programs, including but not limited to general liability, property, workers' compensation, cyber liability, directors and officers (D&O), and healthcare-related coverage.

· Collaborate with external brokers and insurers to ensure adequate and cost-effective coverage.

· Ensure continuity and disaster recovery planning includes appropriate financial risk contingencies.

· Monitor contractual risk exposure and ensure indemnification and insurance requirements are met.

Compliance Oversight

Ensure strong internal controls and internal audit framework.
Maintain compliance with all regulatory, funder, and contractual financial requirements, including healthcare-specific regulations (e.g., Medicare/Medicaid billing, third-party payers).
Guide the organization through internal audits, financial reviews, and due diligence for grants and partnerships.

Team Leadership and Culture Building

Lead and develop a high-performing finance team; foster a culture of collaboration, accountability, and innovation.
Build cross-departmental financial literacy and empower managers to understand and steward program budgets.
Promote a values-driven financial culture that aligns with the organization’s mission, equity goals, and long-term sustainability.

Additional Responsibilities

Maintain compliance with VOA Michigan policies and procedures
Ensure that all duties and responsibilities are carried out in a timely and orderly fashion so that VOA Michigan functions in the most efficient manner possible

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITES

Ability to participate in and facilitate group meetings.
Knowledge of housing regulatory agency accounting practices and budgeting, preferred.

Required:

MBA or related graduate degree in Finance, Accounting, or related field.
Minimum of 10 years of progressive financial leadership experience, with at least 5 years in a senior management role.
Deep knowledge of nonprofit accounting principles and financial management, including fund accounting.
Demonstrated experience in strategic financial planning, analysis, and reporting.
Regulatory and functional acumen in finance, accounting, budgeting, cost control principles, contracting, negotiating, and including General Accepted Accounting Principles.
Ability to analyze financial data and prepare financial reports, statements, and projections.
Strong understanding of healthcare financing and human services operations.
Exceptional critical thinking, analytical, and decision-making skills.

Preferred:

Certified Management Accountant (CMA)
Experience with government contracts, grants management, and healthcare reimbursements.
Familiarity with financial systems such as Blackbaud, MIP, or similar platforms.
