The National Tropical Botanical Garden (NTBG) is seeking a visionary, mission-driven Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to join our executive leadership team and help shape the next chapter of our organization.
NTBG is a nationally recognized nonprofit dedicated to perpetuating tropical plants, ecosystems, and cultural heritage. With five botanical gardens, preserves, and research facilities across Hawaiʻi and Florida, our work connects conservation, science, education, and culture to restore relationships between people, plants, and place.
The Opportunity
Reporting directly to the CEO and partnering closely with the Board of Directors, the CFO will provide strategic financial leadership across the organization.
This is more than a traditional finance role. We are looking for a strategic partner who can turn financial insight into action, strengthen organizational sustainability, and help ensure NTBG has the resources and infrastructure to advance its mission for generations to come.
The CFO will:
• Lead financial strategy, accounting, budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting
• Ensure strong financial controls, compliance, audits, tax filings, and risk management
• Partner with executive and program leadership on strategic planning and organizational decision-making
• Oversee the annual budgeting process and long-term financial forecasting
• Support grant budgeting, financial reporting, and compliance
• Translate complex financial information into clear, actionable recommendations for leadership and the Board
• Lead, mentor, and develop the finance team
• Build strong relationships with auditors, financial institutions, insurers, and other external partners
• Present financial performance, risks, opportunities, and recommendations to the Board and Finance & Audit Committees
What We're Looking For
We are seeking an experienced financial leader who brings both technical expertise and strategic vision, including:
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
• 10+ years of progressively responsible financial management experience, including at least 5 years in a nonprofit environment
• Demonstrated success leading financial strategy, budgeting, forecasting, reporting, compliance, and risk management
• Strong leadership and team-development skills
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, communication, and decision-making abilities
• Ability to make complex financial information accessible to non-financial stakeholders
• Genuine commitment to NTBG’s mission and a collaborative, team-oriented leadership style
Preferred qualifications:
• CPA license
• Nonprofit accounting and federal/foundation grant management experience
• Experience with Blackbaud Financial Edge and Raiser’s Edge
Compensation & Benefits
Salary: $145,000–$155,000 annually
