Title: Chief Financial Officer
Starting Salary: $80,000

I. Position Summary
The Episcopal Diocese of Western North Carolina is the community of Episcopalians in the 28 counties of the westernmost portion of the state, with more than 15,000 members worshiping in 63 year-round congregations, six summer chapels, and two conference centers. The Chief Financial Officer will manage, supervise, and control all financial and business aspects of diocesan operations.
II. Key Relationships
The Chief Financial Officer reports to and is accountable to the Bishop of the Diocese of Western North Carolina, working in close coordination with the Chief of Staff as part of the administrative team. S/he collaborates with coworkers and committee officers. S/he also interacts with clients throughout the Diocese.
III. Essential Functions
- Demonstrate a thorough understanding of accounting for non-for-profit organizations according to Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and applicable Financial Accounting Standards Board pronouncements, particularly FAS 117-1. Responsibilities include oversight of the financial activities of the diocesan office, including, but not limited to, preparation of monthly financial statement, management of cash flow, the receipt of contributions, acknowledgement of those contributions according to IRS standards, payroll and attendant tax filings, accounts payable, accounts receivable, other general ledger accounting, debt structure, maintenance of real property schedules, proper recording of investment activities including board designated, restricted, and endowment and quasi-endowment funds,
- Properly account for all restricted funds including recording of purpose and nature of all funds and gifts to those funds. Reporting of fund balances, available funds, and appropriations, and ensuring that all grants and distributions follow fund guidelines,
- Develop and facilitate the budgeting process in conjunction with the Bishop, Canon to the Ordinary, Diocesan Treasurer, Finance Committee, various Diocesan Committees, and Executive Council,
- Monitor and review annual parochial reports from the parishes and submit diocesan report to The Episcopal Church,
- Supervise software for financial component of Realm, serve as the liaison to parishes for Realm/ACS computer system decisions,
- Process payroll for the Diocese, assist/oversee parish payrolls utilizing ADP Payroll System,
- Co-ordinate the annual independent audit, as required by Canons,
- Monitor and review parish audits,
- Co-ordinate with representatives of the Church Insurance Agency in matters pertaining to risk management, property and casualty insurance, directors and officer’s coverage, and workers’ compensation for the diocese and parishes and missions within the diocese,
- Provide information and support to parishes and conference centers, priests and parish administrators and volunteers, regarding proper accounting,
- Support congregation’s health and life insurance and property and casualty insurance and related administrative issues,
- Support the diocese on the financial aspect of development needs as they relate to capital campaigns, annual fund, major gift and planned giving issues,
- Provide staff support for the Bishop, Finance Committee, and Executive Council,
- Assist the Chancellor of the diocese in matters pertaining to debt, property, loans, or other issues which may arise,
- Prepare annual training for the financial component of Vestry Leadership Day,
- Oversight of Benefits Administrator over enrollments, changes, and terminations for diocesan health, dental, life, disability insurance policies for employees of the diocesan office as well as well eligible participating clergy and laity in parishes and missions of the diocese.
- Assist parishes with financial issues:
- Support internal audit teams for small parishes.
- Perform ad hoc financial assistance and troubleshooting.
- Review level responsible for the accounting for La Capilla, St. Georges and St. Thomas.
- Payroll and Realm Accounting/Contribution conversions.
- Provide annual training in finance matters to parish administrators and treasurers.
- Perform other matters for the Bishop, as assigned.
IV. Position Qualifications
- Professional trained in matters of finance, administration, and accounting
- A bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business, or related field is required. A CPA designation is strongly preferred.
- Thorough understanding of accounting for non-profit organizations according to Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.
- Strong analytical, computer (Word, Outlook, PowerPoint) spreadsheet (Excel) and communication skills.
- Experience in the world of non-profit business, finance, insurance, and property management. This could be through participation on a board of a non-profit or church organization.
- Basic familiarity with the Episcopal Church and its polity regarding congregations, or a willingness to gain this familiarity.
- Experience in budget oversight, i.e., developing and reading budget reports.
- Ability to respond to questions and communicate information with clarity.
- Ability to look forward and make recommendations about how the diocese may achieve its financial goals, particularly in role as advisor to Bishop.
- Ability to speak in front of groups and make presentations.
- Ability to multi-task and respond in a timely manner to a variety of different situations from budget application, investment strategies, property management, financial crisis management, and dealing with local community concerns and complaints.
- Experience with the promotion of Stewardship and Planned Giving in a Christian context, would be ideal.
- Experience and willingness to work collaboratively, as well as ability to work independently and as an initiative-taker.
- Experience in being a team player and supporting organizational values and community life.
VI. Working Conditions and Environment
The Chief Financial Officer works at the Bishop Henry Center, which is a typical office setting. S/he also occasionally attends meetings held in other locations throughout the Diocese. This position requires the ability to see and sit for prolonged periods, and sufficient manual dexterity to write and use typical office equipment on a regular basis. It requires the ability to occasionally stoop, bend, reach, and lift items weighing no more than thirty-five pounds.
