MedQuest Search Solutions, Inc., the nation’s leading healthcare executive search firm, is conducting a new search for an experienced Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to join the executive leadership team of a large, freestanding behavioral health hospital located in Greater Chicago, IL
This is an excellent opportunity for a hands-on, strategic finance leader with hospital experience who thrives in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment. The facility is a newer state-of-the-art psychiatric hospital providing comprehensive inpatient behavioral health and substance use treatment for children, adults and adolescents.
About the Opportunity
Reporting directly to the Hospital Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the CFO serves as a key member of the hospital’s senior leadership team and is responsible for all aspects of financial strategy, reporting, and performance.
This position requires an executive who can balance strategic financial management with day-to-day operational oversight—ensuring compliance, optimizing resources, and driving strong financial results to support the organization’s clinical mission.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee all financial operations of the hospital, ensuring compliance with GAAP, federal, and state regulations.
- Prepare, analyze, and interpret financial statements and reports to guide strategic decision-making.
- Manage budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis to optimize financial performance.
- Lead and mentor finance and accounting staff to ensure accuracy, accountability, and collaboration.
- Direct all aspects of the Revenue Cycle, including billing, collections, AR management, and reimbursement processes.
- Ensure monthly financial statements are completed accurately and timely.
- Oversee cost management, purchasing, and materials management to maintain efficiency.
- Partner with executive leadership on strategic planning, business development, and growth initiatives.
- Lead risk management, contract negotiation, and audit preparation.
- Maintain effective internal controls and ensure a clean audit process.
- Collaborate cross-functionally to ensure organizational alignment and fiscal integrity.
Ideal Candidate Profile
- Chief Financial Officer or Controller experience within a freestanding psychiatric hospital or behavioral health system.
- Hands-on, detail-oriented financial leader with strong hospital accounting and analysis skills.
- Demonstrated success managing revenue cycle operations and improving AR performance.
- Creative problem solver and proactive partner to the CEO and leadership team.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or a related business field required.
- CPA and/or Master’s degree preferred.
- Minimum 2 years of CFO experience in a healthcare setting; behavioral health experience strongly preferred.
- Strong understanding of reimbursement methodologies, cost reporting, and managed care contracts.
- Exceptional communication, analytical, and leadership skills.
