Women’s Elite Rugby (WER) is now accepting applications for (4) General Manager of Team Business Operations for the Bay Breakers, Boston Banshees, Chicago Tempest, and Denver Onyx. Candidates must be excited to work in a startup league while building the foundation for the future.
WER is the newest women’s professional league on the US landscape. Formed as a single-entity league, WER is focused on delivering an entertaining brand of rugby to the US market and providing the highest standard of rugby available to our players.
In collaboration with WER Leadership, the General Manager is an execution-driven ‘doer’ who owns how the entire WER experience in their market comes to life. In addition to owning the team revenue generation, this role drives the execution of supporting initiatives such as marketing, ticketing, operations and other strategies with a local market lens. Collaborating with the functional teams at WER that includes marketing, partnerships, operations, sponsorships, and fan engagement will be necessary to bring the best possible experience to life for fans.
Specific Duties:
Leadership and Strategic Management
- Leading and overseeing activities to deliver a successful and sustainable professional rugby team.
- Managing and developing a 3–5 person business operations team of seasonal workers and volunteers to execute local market experiences for both players and fans.
- Chairing major team projects and initiatives, exercising delegated authority within established management procedures.
- Balancing priorities such as sporting integrity, sustainability, reputation, and commercial growth.
- Serving as the owner of the end-to-end fan experience.
- Maintaining visibility and accessibility to players, staff, volunteers, sponsors, and community partners.
Revenue Generation & Commercial Development
- Owning team revenue generation through execution of commercial initiatives.
- Maximizing commercial opportunities to ensure financial sustainability, including sourcing and supporting sponsors and commercial partners according to WER guidelines.
- Managing team contracts, partnerships, and agreements with local vendors, sponsors, and businesses, converting relationships to the WER structure where applicable.
- Supporting WER in the development and execution of team-specific sales, marketing, merchandising, and media strategies
- Overseeing game-day operations of the team from venue relations, staffing, vendors, security, in-game fan and player amenities and overall fan experience.
- Evolving team brand and implementing marketing strategies to promote long-term growth of both the team and the league for the benefit of fans, players, commercial partners, clubs, and investors.
Community, Communication & Stakeholder Engagement
- Coordinating with league media teams to provide timely content, player access, and storytelling opportunities.
- Developing and maintaining relationships within the community to strengthen and expand the team’s reputation, civic engagement, and commercial success.
- Enabling and supporting the establishment of a vibrant and proactive volunteer group.
- Assisting WER league leadership with event and game day planning and management, including sourcing suitable venues, event production, and commercial development.
Compliance & Governance
- Maintaining and enforcing legal requirements of the WER within the team and in all WER interactions and activities.
- Ensuring compliance with statutory requirements including health and safety, player welfare, and all relevant legal standards.
- In conjunction with WER leadership, develop and manage the team’s annual budget, including revenue forecasting, expense tracking, and monthly reporting.
It is expected that the successful candidate will abide by all written policies and procedures of Women’s Elite Rugby.
Required Minimum Qualifications:
- BA/BS in Sport Management, Business, Marketing/Communications, or other applicable degree.
- 2-4 years of progressive leadership in a multifaceted sports organization or similar high paced environment.
- Expertise in one of three areas: Revenue generation, Brand and Marketing development, or Event Management
- Proven ability to grow fanbase, revenue, community relations at a local market level.
- Experience with strategic planning and implementation in sports and/or entertainment.
- Effective communicator, comfortable providing direct feedback, and experience leading and communicating within high pace and pressure environments.
- Collaborator, effective listener and solution-oriented
- Ability to be a self-starter and work independently in a startup environment.
- Must reside in the market for which they are applying.
Preferred Qualifications: Masters in Sport Management, Business, Marketing/Communications, Leadership or other applicable degree; 5-7 years of leadership experience, start-up experience, and knowledge about the US rugby ecosystem.

Salary range: $40,000-60,000 plus bonus structure.

Work Requirements: Must successfully complete a comprehensive pre-employment background check., Able to work non-traditional hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, and travel as needed in support of team operations and league events.
