The Chief Sales Officer is a strategic executive sales leader with proven sales management experience, a strong background in health insurance, and exceptional relationship-building skills.
ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION
University Health Alliance (UHA) is a physician-founded health insurance company based in Hawaiʻi, dedicated to delivering high-quality, affordable healthcare coverage. Founded in 1996 by medical educators from the University of Hawaiʻi John A. Burns School of Medicine, UHA was created to bring a simpler, more caring approach to employee health insurance – grounded in high-touch service, operational excellence, and a culture rooted in collaboration, integrity, and care.
Today, UHA serves over 4,000 local businesses and their employees, offering medical, drug, and vision plans with a strong focus on wellness, prevention, and personalized service. With approximately 200 employees, UHA is known for its personalized approach to member and provider relationships, dedication to community health, and reputation as one of Hawaiʻi’s Best Places to Work. Accredited by URAC, UHA upholds the highest standards in clinical decisionmaking, patient rights, and access to care.
ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY
The local health care market is undergoing a seismic shift, touched off by apparent consolidation between Hawaii’s major payer and provider system. As with all major transitions, smaller and more nimble organizations will find both risk and opportunity. UHA is poised to seize the opportunity to increase its presence and impact. By focusing on its mission, values, and higher level of service, UHA will thoughtfully expand its membership through employers and broker partners.
In this role, the Chief Sales Officer (CSO) will lead commercial membership growth and retention across broker, PEO, and direct sales channels, with responsibility for setting strategy and building a high-performing sales team. The CSO opportunity includes designing a multi-year growth plan, elevating enterprise client and broker engagement through education and value-based selling, expanding direct sales outreach to small and medium clients, and identifying new market opportunities. The CSO will also oversee sales operations, drive disciplined use of SalesforceCRM, and partner cross-functionally to ensure seamless onboarding and exceptional client experience. Success will require both strategic vision and hands-on leadership, someone who can coach talent, reinforce accountability, and align pricing and positioning to win in a highly regulated environment.
The ideal candidate is a seasoned executive sales leader, ideally within health insurance, employee benefits, or the brokerage ecosystem. Excellent communications skills, strategic positioning, and product/pricing concepts are important, along with fluency in Salesforce or similar CRM tools. The organization values leaders who are actively engaged in the local business community, maintain an active Insurance Producer License, and bring credibility across both employed sales teams and broker channels. Preferred candidates will have deep relationships with Hawaiʻi employers and brokers, a demonstrated ability to win and retain large group business, and a leadership style that combines strategic vision, decisive execution, and a commitment to the organization’s purpose and long-term impact.
Target Annual Compensation: $200,000 - $230,000 base salary plus incentive bonus
