Beech Valley is partnering with a mission-driven nonprofit organization in Long Island, NY seeking an Interim Chief Financial Officer (CFO). This organization operates with a $128M budget, 360 staff members, and over 60 programs focused on substance use and addiction services, mental health, senior and youth services, parent support, immigrant services, and homeless shelters.
With the current CFO departing in two weeks and the organization midway through its audit, this interim leader will stabilize the finance function, oversee ongoing audit activities, and provide strategic financial leadership while the CEO conducts a thoughtful search for a permanent CFO.
What You’ll Do
- Serve as the executive financial leader for a $128M nonprofit organization primarily funded through government contracts
- Provide continuity and leadership during the transition from the outgoing CFO
- Oversee a 14-person accounting department, including evaluation of team structure and capabilities
- Assess whether team members are aligned to the right roles and responsibilities; recommend structural or talent adjustments as needed
- Lead completion of the organization’s audit, coordinating with external auditors and internal stakeholders
- Provide financial oversight across 60+ programs and two operating clinics
- Evaluate and optimize the recent NetSuite implementation, including financial reporting and internal controls
- Oversee budgeting processes currently managed in Excel and assess future-state budgeting tools and processes
What We’re Looking For
- Prior experience serving as a CFO or Interim CFO within a nonprofit organization
- Strong background in government-funded nonprofit environments
- Demonstrated experience managing large, complex budgets ($100M+)
- Proven leadership of multi-person accounting/finance teams
- Deep understanding of nonprofit audit processes and fund accounting
- Experience with ERP systems (NetSuite strongly preferred)
- Ability to step into a transitioning environment and quickly establish credibility with executive leadership and the Board
Nice to Have
- Experience improving or remediating ERP implementations
- Background in human services, healthcare, behavioral health, or related nonprofit sectors
- Experience evaluating organizational design and finance team structure
