The Voyage Senior Living is a not-for-profit. The CFO functions as a member of the management staff and is directly responsible to the Chief Executive Officer. Plans, directs and controls the corporation’s overall financial plans, policies, accounting practices and relationships with lending institutions and the financial community. The CFO is responsible for directing the functions of accounting, budgeting, credit, treasury, tax, real estate, insurance, capital investing and various administrative functions for the corporation and its programs. First and foremost, it is the responsibility of the CFO to ensure that all financial records are kept according to Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), to utilize financial data as an aid to management, and to assure compliance with federal and state regulations. The CFO works directly with the Board of Directors and management staff in regard to policies and programs. The CFO performs a wide variety of tasks including but not limited to: establishes line of credit; directs receipt, disbursement and expenditures of money or capital assets; approves and signs documents effecting monetary transactions; directs activities concerned with safekeeping, control and accounting for assets; and leads and directs the work of others.
Essential Job Functions:
- Supervise/prepare monthly financial statements and other monthly financial reports.
- Supervise/prepare budgets (annual income and expense, capital expenditures, five year projections, etc.).
- Review all regulatory reports required to be filed with the federal, state and local governments, including federal and state tax returns.
- Supervise preparation of payroll tax returns and assure proper payment of payroll taxes and filing of related forms.
- Supervise/review the semi-monthly preparation of payroll.
- Monitor cash flow.
- Supervise/review monthly bank reconciliations.
- Review resident housing files as well as the TST-2 report required by IHDA.
- Act as a liaison with the Board of Directors, CPA and accounting firm personnel, and the Finance Committee.
- Oversee annual audit and in collaboration with upper management respond to any findings with resolutions and plans of action.
- Oversee payroll functions and the bi-monthly processing of payroll.
- Able to oversee and write grant opportunities.
- Serve on committees as assigned.
- Attend staff, Board of Directors and other required meetings and participate by assisting in the ongoing strategic planning and managing for success of all corporate activities.
- Compile a financial report for monthly board meetings and any other reports as may be required.
- Supervise preparation of general ledger and other financial records.
- Support the Board of Directors and CEO by providing appropriate reporting and analysis as required or requested.
- Maintain banking relationships and access to adequate financing levels including negotiating the procurement of capital and lines of credit.
- Assure protection for the corporation’s assets through internal control, internal auditing, and proper insurance coverage.
- Keep CEO informed of all financial matters and provide advice on financial matters, as well as, opportunities or pitfalls.
- Oversee cash disbursements for payment of the organization’s expenditures in accordance with disbursement policies.
- Oversee accounts receivable/cash receipts in accordance with corporate policy.
- Write and/or approve accounting procedures and policies.
- Provide on-site day to day supervision of the accounting department, monitor leave and work schedules to ensure proper coverage of the accounting department at all times, and conduct monthly meetings with department staff.
- Interview potential staff, perform evaluations, and prepare and recommend job descriptions and job qualifications for the accounting department.
- Oversee the Maintenance Coordinator and their department.
- Supervise/review the accounting information system (IT), including software maintenance contracts, software upgrades, hardware purchases, and quality of operations.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Education & Training
Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Accounting is required. Certified Public Accountant is preferred. Extensive experience in financial management of a not-for-profit corporation, which includes fund accounting in a complex business structure spread over multiple entities.
Experience
Three years of work experience/on the job training that provides knowledge of generally accepted principles, theories and practices used in accountancy is preferred.
Skills, Aptitudes, and other Qualifications
Must have knowledge of the theories, principles, methods and procedures of professional accounting, and knowledge of office methods and procedures. Be proficient in using word processing and spreadsheet software, preferably Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel. Have the ability to perform detailed work involving the application of accounting theory to routine accounting problems. Must have the ability to prepare and complete accurate accounting reports, evaluate routine accounting problems, analyze and interpret complex accounting records and reports. Must be able to identify and report any financial errors or omissions immediately. Must have excellent verbal/written communication skills.
Organizational and interpersonal skills are required. Must be able to perform detailed work involving written and numerical data and be able to do mathematical calculations rapidly and accurately. The CFO position requires familiarity with new technology available for corporate operations, including efficiency of operations, secure inter-company communications, and secure protection of all company data. The ability to relate to all staff and all segments of the community/public are required. Must be able to plan, develop, execute and evaluate programs, projects, and assignments. The ability to multi task is essential.
