JOB SUMMARY: Under supervision of the Chief Executive Officer, the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) serves as a key member of the executive leadership team and is responsible for the strategic and operational oversight of all financial functions of the organization. The CFO ensures the financial health, sustainability, and growth of ETSU Health by aligning financial strategies with the clinical and educational mission. This role works closely with the CEO, Board of Directors, and physician leadership to support high-quality patient care, academic excellence, and operational efficiency.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Strategic Leadership
- Provide financial leadership and strategic guidance to support the organization’s mission, vision, and long-term goals.
- Serve as a trusted advisor to the CEO, Board, and executive team on financial planning, capital investments, and growth initiatives.
- Lead development and execution of long-range financial plans, including expansion, service line growth, and academic partnerships.
Financial Management & Reporting
- Oversee all financial operations including accounting, budgeting, forecasting, treasury, and financial reporting.
- Ensure timely, accurate, and transparent financial reporting to executive leadership, the Board, and each department.
- Develop and maintain financial dashboards and key performance indicators (KPIs).
- Monitor and manage cash flow, margins, and overall financial performance.
Compliance & Risk Management
- Ensure compliance with all applicable financial reporting and regulatory standards as well as internal policies.
- Oversee internal controls, audits, and risk management processes.
- Maintain strong relationships with external auditors, financial institutions, and regulatory agencies.
Operational Partnership
- Collaborate with clinical and administrative leaders to improve operational efficiency, revenue enhancement and cost management.
- Support service line development, capital planning, and facility investments.
- Provide financial insights to inform decision-making at all levels of the organization.
Team Leadership
- Lead, mentor, and develop the accounting team.
- Foster a culture of accountability, transparency, and continuous improvement.
- Promote cross-functional collaboration across departments.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Supervises the Accounting team including Senior Accountants, Payroll, and Accounts Payable.
- Makes recommendations for personnel actions to the Chief Executive Officer.
- May review and approve evaluations of support staff.
- Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and procedures, and state and federal laws and regulations.
- Responsibilities include participating in interviews, hiring, and training employees. Planning, assigning, and directing work, appraising performance, rewarding and disciplining employees, addressing complaints and resolving problems.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or related field required. Active CPA license is preferred. Minimum of 10 years of progressive financial leadership experience, with at least 5 years in a senior executive role. Experience in healthcare required; experience in a multispecialty medical group or academic medical setting strongly preferred.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Deep understanding of healthcare finance, including physician compensation models, revenue cycle, and payor dynamics. Experience with electronic medical record (EMR) systems (e.g., Epic) and financial/ERP systems. Strong analytical, strategic thinking, and problem-solving skills. General knowledge of billing and collections, ICD-10, and CPT coding, medical terminology, and computer software applications. Ability to operate computers, keyboards, and printers. Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with faculty members, staff, patients, and other third parties. Ability to concentrate under high demands and listen effectively. Ability to organize tasks; work as a team member and independently using sound management skills with a variety of professional disciplines. Ability to lead through change and drive organizational performance. Convey a professional and positive image and attitude.
