Foundation Overview
HealthWell Foundation is a Forbes 100-rated, Maryland-based 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that provides financial assistance to underinsured Americans to help them afford life-changing medical treatments. Our mission is to reduce financial barriers to care for underinsured patients living with chronic or life-altering diseases. HWF Direct, LLC is a wholly owned subsidiary of the HealthWell Foundation, also based in Maryland, that provides high quality customer service paired with state-of-the-art contact center technology to serve HealthWell’s national patient community.
Job Purpose And Position Overview
All positions at HealthWell are designed to proactively further its efforts in meeting its mission. Specifically, the Chief Finance Officer at HealthWell is expected to:
- Provide oversight, stewardship, planning, and strategic counsel related to HealthWell and HWF Direct’s financial position in cooperation with HealthWell’s President and Chief Executive Officer, Board of Directors, Board-appointed Finance Committee, and third-party financial auditors and advisors.
- Collaborate and cooperate with the internal and Board-level compliance officer and legal counsel.
- Plan for long-term viability in consideration of the strong and direct connection between Foundation operations and finance departments and provide critical thinking regarding these departments.
- Provide expertise to HealthWell in the areas of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and all applicable laws and regulations, accounting software, budget planning and monitoring, financial risk management, and accounting and financial strategic oversight, including payroll, banking, and investments.
Key Success Factors
As a key executive, the Chief Finance Officer is expected to provide overall leadership to the HealthWell organization and work collaboratively with colleagues and external customers. This is a highly sensitive/confidential position, and all information must be handled using complete discretion. The right candidate will have a strong presence and highly developed verbal and written communication skills in addition to having experience working and building relationships with a diverse and engaged Board of Directors. Areas of Responsibility
- Reports to the President and Chief Executive Officer, serves as a member of HealthWell’s Senior Management Team, and provides leadership, mentorship, and professional development to all direct reports to promote continued growth among staff for succession planning purposes.
- Responsible for all internal controls and effective financial risk management plan, to drive HealthWell’s financial strategy and compliance.
- Oversee procurement of appropriate insurance for the Foundation, the Board, and staff.
- Presents strategic, accurate, and transparent reports related to HealthWell’s financial health to the President and Chief Executive Officer, Senior Management Team, Board of Directors, and Board-appointed Finance Committee on a monthly (electronically) and quarterly (at Board meetings) basis.
- Provides strategic financial and programmatic leadership to the President and Chief Executive Officer, Senior Management Team, and Board of Directors related to finances, investments, operational and administrative expenses, staffing and benefits, and capital investments related to HealthWell’s ability to continuing to meet mission.
- Manages the relationships with HealthWell’s independent, third-party financial auditor, investment portfolio managers, banking partners, and other financial-related consultants and contractors.
- Serves as key point of contact for HealthWell’s annual financial audit, 990 filing, 401(k) audit and the financial aspects of all other program audits.
- Monitors HealthWell’s investment portfolio and its cash position closely and makes strategic recommendations as needed to appropriately manage assets in accordance with HealthWell’s Investment Policy Statement.
- Drives the development of HealthWell and HWF Direct’s annual budgets, based on financial forecasting and modeling, in collaboration with department heads and presents the draft budget with rationale to the Board of Directors for approval.
- Oversees staff in the Finance department to drive a successful monthly closing including the closing of the accounting period within accounting software, preparation of monthly financial statements, and completion of reconciliations in a timely manner.
- Other duties as requested.
Technical Qualifications & Education Requirements
- Minimum five years of executive experience, with an additional ten plus years in corporate financial management.
- Minimum three years of non-profit finance experience (paid or volunteer).
- BSc/BA in Accounting, Finance, or relevant field; Master’s in Finance/MBA preferred.
- Equivalent combination of education and work experience may be considered.
- Computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite products, specifically proficient in Excel.
