We are looking for a Salesforce CPQ Technical Solution Architect to own the end-to-end technical design of our quote-to-cash platform.
You will be incorporated into complex CPQ implementations involving intricate product catalogs, multi-tier pricing, subscription and consumption models, channel/partner quoting, and integrations with ERP, billing, CLM, and provisioning systems.
You will set the technical direction, mentor the build team, and defend design decisions.
The ideal candidate has scars from 5 full-lifecycle CPQ implementations.
What You'll Do Solution Architecture & Design
● Design the end-to-end technical architecture for CPQ and the broader lead-to-cash (L2C) / quote-to-cash (Q2C) ecosystem.
● Design product catalogs, bundle structures, option constraints, and pricing waterfalls that survive contact with real-world sales motions.
● Architect advanced pricing strategies: tiered, block, percent-of-total, contracted prices, cost-plus, channel discounts, deal-desk overrides, and usage-based models.
● Define data models for products, price books, quotes, orders, contracts, subscriptions, assets, and amendments making sure they hold up through renewals, co-terms, and mid-term changes.
● Establish patterns for advanced approvals, deal desk workflows, quote templates, and document generation.
● Design integration architecture between CPQ and ERP (NetSuite, SAP, Oracle), billing platforms (Zuora, Salesforce Billing, Stripe), CLM (Conga, Ironclad, DocuSign CLM), provisioning, tax (Avalara, Vertex), and data warehouse layers.
Technical Leadership
● Set development standards: package strategy, environment strategy, branching, CI/CD, test data management, and release management.
● Establish performance and scale guardrails - calculation sequence design, large quote handling, batch quote processing, async pricing, and governor-limit-safe patterns.
● Own the resolution path for the gnarliest issues: quote calculator misbehavior, price rule conflicts, lookup table explosions, large-bundle latency, and amendment/renewal edge cases.
● Must be exposed to QCP and have the ability to distinguish between when it’s required and the method in which to capitalize on it
Discovery, Delivery & Stakeholder Management
● Translate ambiguous business requirements into precise functional and technical specifications.
● Produce architecture artifacts: solution design documents, data flow diagrams, integration specs, security models, and decision logs.
Required Qualifications & Experience
● 10+ years in enterprise software, with 6+ years focused specifically on Salesforce CPQ (formerly Steelbrick).
● Led the technical architecture for at least 3 full-lifecycle CPQ implementations, including at least one at enterprise scale (1,000+ users, complex product catalog, multi-geo, or high quote volume).
● Demonstrated experience with subscription, recurring, and usage-based revenue models including amendments, renewals, co-terminations, and ramp deals.
● Hands-on experience integrating CPQ with at least one major ERP and one billing platform.
● Experience leading rescue or remediation of an underperforming CPQ implementation is a strong plus.
Technical Depth
● Salesforce CPQ: Deep mastery of product rules, price rules, advanced approvals, quote templates, configuration attributes, lookup queries/objects, quote calculator plugins, custom actions, and the legacy vs. new quote calculator.
● Salesforce Platform: Apex, Lightning Web Components, Flow, SOQL/SOSL, Platform Events, Change Data Capture, Sharing & Security model.
● Integration: REST and SOAP API patterns, event-driven architecture, MuleSoft or equivalent middleware, bulk and async patterns, idempotency, error handling, and reconciliation.
● DevOps: Salesforce DX, source-driven development, Git, CI/CD pipelines (Copado, Gearset, Flosum, or equivalent), and managed package handling.
● Data: Data modeling, large data volume considerations, archiving strategy, and migration patterns for products, price books, contracts, and assets.
Soft Skills
● Excellent written and verbal communication; able to produce architecture documents that are read, and presentations that are remembered.
● Comfort with ambiguity and the discipline to drive decisions when stakeholders cannot agree.
Preferred Qualifications
● Experience with Salesforce Revenue Cloud / Revenue Lifecycle Management (RLM) and an opinion on the CPQ-to-RLM transition path.
● Salesforce Billing implementation experience.
● Industries CPQ (Vlocity) experience for those coming from comms, media, energy, or utilities.
● Experience in regulated or complex industries: SaaS, manufacturing, life sciences, financial services, telco, or industrial.
Certifications Required:
● Salesforce Certified CPQ Specialist
● Salesforce Certified Administrator
Strongly Preferred:
● Salesforce Certified Application Architect
● Salesforce Certified System Architect
● Salesforce Certified Sales Cloud Consultant
● Salesforce Certified Revenue Cloud Consultant (where available) Differentiator:
● Salesforce Certified Technical Architect (CTA)
● Salesforce Certified Industries CPQ Developer
● MuleSoft Certified Integration Architect
