Position Overview
The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is a key executive leadership role responsible for maintaining the overall fiscal health, sustainability, and regulatory compliance of the organization and its healthcare affiliate. Reporting directly to the President & CEO, the CFO will serve as a strategic partner to the executive team, Board of Directors, and program leaders to ensure the financial strength needed to carry out our mission.
This role requires a mission-driven leader with deep expertise in non-profit financial management, a strong working knowledge of NYC/NYS/Federal government funding streams and contractual billing, and experience in real estate/housing development financing. The CFO will directly lead a finance team of 20+ staff (including a Controller and Director of Budgets), fostering a high-performance, collaborative environment that supports our operational growth.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Strategic Oversight
- Strategic Partnership: Serve as a core advisor to the President & CEO and Board of Directors, aligning financial strategies directly with organizational and programmatic goals.
- Financial Planning & Systems: Oversee multi-year financial planning, budgeting, and modeling to improve reporting, drive efficiency, and mitigate operational risks.
- Team Leadership: Supervise, mentor, and build a 20+ member finance department, promoting a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and professional development.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with clinical, program, and operations leads to align fiscal resources with day-to-day services.
Financial Operations, Compliance & Technology
- Core Operations: Direct all daily fiscal operations, including government contracts, general ledger, AP/AR, payroll, and budget management.
- Governance & Reporting: Prepare and present quarterly financial updates and annual operating budgets to executive leadership, the Board, and Board committees.
- Audits & Internal Controls: Lead the annual external audit process, ensure rigorous internal controls, and maintain strict compliance with federal, state, and local regulatory bodies.
- Technology Modernization: Evaluate and implement updated financial software and tech tools to streamline reporting and modernize departmental workflows.
Real Estate & Capital Development Financing
- Capital Financing: Collaborate with leadership and real estate teams to secure financing for property development, acquisitions, and facility improvements (working with lenders, government agencies, and investors).
- Feasibility & Modeling: Conduct feasibility analyses and evaluate financial models, utilizing tax credits, capital grants, and specialized funding mechanisms to support growth.
- Portfolio Strategy: Participate in long-term property portfolio planning to align physical real estate growth with client and community needs.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or related field required. Master’s degree (MBA, MPA) or CPA strongly preferred.
- Experience: 10+ years of progressive senior financial leadership within a complex, multi-site non-profit, healthcare, or government-funded environment.
- Contract & Fiscal Expertise: Expertise in non-profit accounting standards, external audits, risk management, and NYC/NYS government funding streams and reimbursement processes.
- Real Estate & Capital Knowledge: Background in capital financing, real estate development, or supportive housing funding structures preferred.
- Executive Presence: Strong leadership and communication skills, with a proven ability to translate complex financial concepts for non-financial stakeholders and Board members.
- Mobility: Ability to travel to program sites across the NYC metropolitan area as needed.
