The Chief Financial Officer is a senior executive with organization-wide responsibility for financial, strategic and administrative matters. The CFO reports directly to the Chief Executive Officer and serves as a key strategic and business partner to the CEO, Board of Directors and Senior Leadership Team.
With annual revenues approaching $35 million, Good Shepherd Community Care is a nonprofit healthcare organization based in Eastern Massachusetts. It provides a diverse portfolio of hospice, palliative care, community-based programs. It also operates Parlin House, an 10-bed hospice residence, and relies upon strong philanthropic support from a large and growing base of donors.
The organization is entering a new chapter under new executive leadership and seeks an experienced, collaborative and forward-thinking CFO who can help position the organization for sustainable growth while maintaining strong stewardship of its financial resources.
The CFO will work closely with the CEO, Board of Directors and Senior Leadership Team to translate strategic priorities into actionable and measurable financial and operational results. Beyond financial leadership, the CFO will help integrate organizational priorities across departments, strengthen operational performance, modernize business systems, improve financial and operational reporting, and provide thoughtful leadership that supports Good Shepherd’s mission of compassionate, community-based healthcare.
The CFO will recognize and leverage the significant institutional knowledge of the existing finance team, particularly in Medicare billing and reimbursement, while introducing best practices, modern financial management, stronger analytics, improved use of technology and strategic decision support.
Job Responsibilities:
EXECUTIVE LEADERSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES
- Serve as a trusted strategic partner to the CEO, Board of Directors and Senior Leadership Team.
- Help develop and execute the organization’s long-term strategic plan.
- Translate strategic priorities into measurable financial and operational objectives.
- Lead organization-wide financial planning, forecasting and performance management.
- Evaluate strategic opportunities, partnerships, acquisitions, capital investments and new service lines.
- Identify financial and organizational risks and develop strategies to strengthen performance and sustainability.
- Foster collaboration and accountability across the leadership team to ensure alignment of organizational priorities.
- Serve as a visible organizational leader with employees, physicians, community partners, bankers, auditors, regulators and Board members.
- Provide objective, timely and fact-based financial analysis to support organizational decision-making.
FINANCIAL LEADERSHIP
- Direct all accounting, budgeting, forecasting, treasury, reimbursement, and financial reporting functions.
- Lead development of annual operating and capital budgets and long-range financial plans.
- Deliver timely monthly financial reporting, including income statements, balance sheets and cash flow statements, supported by meaningful executive dashboards.
- Develop multi-year financial forecasts and scenario analyses to support strategic decision-making.
- Ensure appropriate cash management and liquidity while improving forecasting accuracy and financial visibility.
- Develop and maintain strong internal controls, financial policies, compliance and enterprise risk management.
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, Medicare and Medicaid regulations, grant requirements and all applicable federal and state regulations.
- Establish financial metrics and reporting that provide leadership with a clear understanding of organizational performance and emerging risks.
OPERATIONAL LEADERSHIP
The CFO will serve as a key operational leader, partnering closely with the CEO and Senior Leadership Team to improve organizational effectiveness and ensure execution of strategic priorities.
Responsibilities Include:
- Provide executive oversight of designated administrative functions as assigned by the CEO, which may include Information Technology, Facilities, Procurement, Financial Risk Management and other financial support services.
- Promote integration across finance, clinical operations, administration and support departments.
- Develop performance metrics that improve organizational accountability, operational efficiency and resource utilization.
- Participate in leadership of cross-functional initiatives that improve productivity while maintaining the highest standards of patient care.
- Support organizational planning, workforce strategy and resource allocation decisions.
- Help leadership evaluate the financial and operational implications of major organizational decisions.
- Establish clear accountability for financial and operational results within areas of responsibility.
HEALTHCARE FINANCIAL LEADERSHIP
- Lead reimbursement strategy, revenue cycle management, payer performance analysis and cost-management initiatives.
- Monitor financial performance across all service lines, including Hospice, Palliative Care, GUIDE, HeartPlay/Camp Erin and Parlin House.
- Evaluate profitability, resource utilization, staffing effectiveness and service-line sustainability.
- Develop operational dashboards measuring census, productivity, staffing, margins, cash flow and other key performance indicators (KPIs).
- Identify trends and variances and recommend corrective actions when appropriate.
- Recommend operational improvements that strengthen both mission impact and financial sustainability.
- Work closely with clinical and operational leaders to ensure financial considerations are incorporated into service-line planning and decision-making.
TECHNOLOGY AND ORGANIZATIONAL MODERNIZATION
The CFO will partner with other members of Senior Leadership Team to champion modernization initiatives that improve organizational effectiveness through better technology, systems, analytics and business processes.
Responsibilities Include:
- Develop and implement a financial and operational modernization roadmap.
- Evaluate and implement technologies that improve efficiency, automation, reporting and decision-making.
- Partner with clinical and operational leaders to optimize the use of information systems throughout the organization.
- Develop and maintain strong financial reporting through business intelligence tools and predictive analytics.
- Ensure effective integration among financial systems, electronic medical records and operational reporting platforms.
- Identify opportunities to improve data quality, reporting accuracy and organizational visibility.
- Foster a culture of continuous improvement and innovation.
BOARD AND GOVERNANCE LEADERSHIP
- Serve as the principal financial advisor to the Board of Directors, Executive Committee and Finance, Investment and Audit Committee.
- Present financial information in a clear, understandable and strategic manner.
- Help Board members understand financial trends, operational performance, organizational risks and strategic opportunities.
- Provide the Board with timely analysis and recommendations regarding significant financial and operational matters.
- Maintain productive relationships with external auditors, banks, investment advisors, regulatory agencies and legal counsel.
- Support annual audits and ensure timely completion of all regulatory and financial reporting.
- Respect and reinforce the distinction between Board governance and management responsibilities.
LEADERSHIP AND ORGANIZATIONAL PARTNERSHIP
The CFO will lead through collaboration, recognizing and leveraging the deep institutional knowledge and operational expertise of the existing finance and accounting team while strengthening the organization’s financial leadership and capabilities.
Success in this role requires sound judgment, emotional intelligence, humility and the ability to build trust while strengthening financial strategy, systems and organizational performance.

- Develop and grow the existing finance and accounting team and its leadership capabilities.
- Serve as a trusted strategic partner and resource to the Board, CEO and Senior Leadership Team, providing timely, transparent and fact-based guidance.
- Develop productive, collaborative relationships with Board members, Board committee chairs, auditors, bankers and external advisors.
- Demonstrate the professionalism and judgment necessary to collaborate with diverse stakeholders who may hold differing perspectives on financial strategy and organizational priorities.
- Communicate complex financial information clearly and respectfully, fostering constructive dialogue and informed decision-making.
- Work collegially with the Board and organizational leadership, recognizing and respecting the different governance and management roles of each.
- Demonstrate the ability to build consensus through persuasion, tact and patience.
- Foster a culture of accountability, transparency and continuous improvement throughout the finance function and across the organization.
- Participate as a member of the management team. Participate in the administrative on call and holiday rotation.
Schedule And Weekly Hours:
Monday to Friday, 9 am to 5 pm. 40-hour position.
Required Education, Skills And Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration or related discipline.
- Minimum of ten years of progressively responsible financial leadership.
- Demonstrated executive financial leadership within healthcare. organization.
- Experience with Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement.
- Experience leading an organization with revenue of $25 million or greater.
- Strong knowledge of financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, treasury management, reimbursement, internal controls and audits.
- Experience presenting financial information to governing boards and senior management.
- Strong analytical, communication, leadership and relationship-building skills.

Preferred Education, Skills And Experience:
- CPA.
- MBA, MHA or other relevant advanced degree.
- Experience in nonprofit healthcare organizations.
- Hospice or palliative care experience.
- Experience leading organizational transformation, modernization or technology implementation.
- Experience managing multiple healthcare service lines.
- Experience implementing business intelligence and financial analytics platforms.

Pay Range:
Salary range: $180,000-$200,000. This number reflects an average starting range for this position. Individual pay is determined through a variety of factors including experience, education, certifications, and skills and can exceed the range.
