With strong investment from both corporate partners and individual philanthropy, we have been able to grow our programs significantly. We have recently expanded our presence in San Diego and have plans to grow our footprint nationally.
The Opportunity
Our client has seen tremendous growth in fundraising results recently, allowing us to expand our program offerings and assist more veterans in securing good-paying, stable, and dignified careers. We seek an experienced fundraising leader to build a comprehensive fundraising program, including the necessary administrative infrastructure to expand our corporate partnerships, foundation grants, major gifts, and monthly donor programs.

The Role
The Chief Development Officer will develop comprehensive annual fundraising plans to achieve ambitious goals across multiple revenue streams. As a senior leader, this role involves working closely with senior leadership to maintain a strong pipeline of current and future donors through consistent stewardship of existing partners and timely identification and cultivation of new donors. Additionally, the Chief Development Officer will collaborate with the Director of Marketing and program delivery staff to create compelling fundraising appeals across various communication channels, including online giving, corporate partnerships, pitch decks, event sponsorships, and grant proposals.
This position also entails developing, growing, and stewarding relationships with individuals, corporations, and foundations to support our client. The ideal candidate, passionate about veteran transition, will build nationwide engagement and attract support to expand our mission across the country.
The Chief Development Officer will be a strategic thinker and deliberate implementer, serving as a thought partner to senior leadership. This role combines a goal-oriented attitude with a long-term vision for success, playing a crucial part in establishing benchmark reporting and standard operating procedures to aid our transformation from a grassroots organization to a national changemaker.
Impact Areas
Fundraising Strategy:
Develop and execute a dynamic fundraising strategy tailored to the unique needs of a veterans focused nonprofit. Build upon the existing fundraising road map to identify and cultivate potential funding sources, including individual donors, foundations, corporate partners, and government grants.
Donor Relations:
Manage, oversee, cultivate and steward relationships communications with individual donors, sponsors, and partners.
Create a donor-centered approach to engagement, ensuring that supporters are well-informed and enthusiastic about our mission.
Public Profile:
Develop and implement a comprehensive communications and marketing strategy to elevate the organization’s public profile. Share success stories, engage with our community, and promote our work.
Data and Financial Management:
Oversee the budget and financial management of development activities, tracking income, expenses, and financial health. Make strategic adjustments as needed to meet development goals in coordination with senior leadership.
Leadership and Team Management:
Provide leadership and guidance to the development team, fostering a collaborative and results-driven work environment. Encourage team members to innovate and achieve fundraising objectives.
Professional Experience/Qualifications
- 10+ years of experience in fundraising with at least 5 years raising over $5M annually with a proven track record of growing comprehensive fundraising programs.
- Passion for veterans and their transition, with a commitment to the organization's mission.
- Deep knowledge of developing major gifts from individual donors, foundations, and corporations coupled with a minimum of 5 years’ experience in managing and growing fundraising teams and strategies.
- Demonstrated ability to leverage strategic interactions with funding decision-makers, such as foundation program directors, government agencies, individuals, and corporate entities.
- Experience in reviewing and refining fundraising operations, from budgeting to projections to tracking interactions, dashboards, reports, and deadlines in a CRM. Strong data and financial acumen. Proficient in using recent versions of computer software applications, including CRMs and presentation software.
- Project management: skilled at independently managing projects, and meeting deadlines.
- Highly self-motivated and disciplined in setting and achieving goals. Ability to work under pressure and be flexible, creative, and enthusiastic.
- Leadership & Communications: Strong leadership and interpersonal skills. Collaborative and supportive team member with both staff and volunteers. Ability to engage with individuals from diverse cultures or backgrounds. Excellent communication abilities, both oral and written, with a clear and concise style. Demonstrated ability to present to high-level decision-makers.
- Experience in developing strong corporate partnerships for a nonprofit organization. Ability to explain the value proposition for corporate partnerships with nonprofit organizations.
- Must be able to travel and work evenings and weekends as needed
Education
University degree or equivalent acceptable combination of education and experience. Graduate degree and/or CFRE designation is preferred.
