M&W Contractors, Inc. is a small but growing industrial contractor specializing in pipe fabrication, steel erection, and equipment setting for a range of industries – primarily Agricultural Processing. Our team of 50–60 dedicated professionals take pride in delivering quality craftsmanship, safe work environments, and long-term value to our clients. We are seeking an experienced Controller/CFO to join our team and oversee all financial reporting and accounting operations of the company.
Position Summary
The Controller/CFO will be responsible for all financial reporting and accounting operations of the company. A strong focus based on precision, leadership, and systems integration. This role demands a deep understanding of financial operations within a construction or maintenance-focused organization, especially as it pertains to bonding, lien waivers, retainage, and audit preparedness. The Controller/CFO must be highly tactical, detail-oriented, and capable of driving cross-functional collaboration.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Reporting & Oversight
- Own all financial reporting for the organization, including monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processes.
- Prepare and manage GAAP-compliant financial statements.
- Coordinate and lead the annual audit process, liaising with external auditors.
- Manage all internal and external financial compliance requirements.
Construction & Contract Accounting
- Manage and track bonding requirements, including payment and performance bonds.
- Ensure accuracy and compliance regarding retainage, final lien waivers, and partial lien waivers.
- Oversee extra work order billings and ensure appropriate documentation and tracking.
- Ensure proper handling of A/R related to change orders and partial payments.
Payroll & HR Coordination
- Provide financial oversight of payroll processing and approval workflows, ensuring compliance with multi-state regulatory and accounting standards.
- Review and validate unemployment insurance and payroll tax compliance activities to support accurate financial reporting and adherence to statutory requirements.
- Oversee the financial administration and reconciliation of captive insurance programs with particular focus on workers’ compensation funding, reserves, and liabilities.
Systems & Technology Management
- Operate and manage financial systems including GEAC Star Builder (legacy system) and Crystal Report Writer.
- Leverage advanced Excel capabilities for modeling, analysis, and reporting.
- Work alongside IT and operations to ensure integration across multiple enterprise management tools.
Operational Finance & Cash Management
- Monitor and manage cash flow forecasting, working capital, and liquidity.
- Ensure timely and accurate billing and collections processes.
- Prepare budgets, forecasts, and variance analysis in collaboration with department heads.
Leadership & Collaboration
- Provide strong leadership to the accounting team, fostering a culture of accountability and precision.
- Collaborate with operations, HR, procurement, and project management teams to ensure seamless financial operations.
- Provide financial guidance and support to executive leadership.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field; CPA preferred.
- 10+ years of progressive accounting experience.
- Experience in embedded maintenance or construction-related organization.
- Understanding of and exposure to bonding, lien waiver processes, and retainage.
- Experience with captive insurance programs administration.
- Prior experience auditing financial statements and managing external audits.
- Expertise in multi-state payroll, unemployment, and tax processing.
- Advanced Excel functions.
- Experience working with complex enterprise tools and financial systems.
- Strong project accounting experience with ability to manage detailed billing processes.
Preferred
- CPA designation.
- GEAC Star Builder and Crystal Report Writer experience.
- Experience with enterprise project management.
