Job Description
The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is a key member of the Executive Leadership Team, responsible for the financial integrity and operational excellence of our $58M nonprofit organization. This role provides strategic leadership in finance, technology, and business operations, ensuring compliance, sustainability, and mission alignment. The CFO champions the YMCA’s core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility, while advancing our cause of youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.
The CFO oversees Finance, Development Accounting, Accounts Receivable (AR), Accounts Payable (AP), and CRM systems.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA or MBA strongly preferred.
- Minimum 10 years of progressive financial leadership experience, ideally in a nonprofit or complex organization.
- Expertise in budgeting, forecasting, fund accounting, and grant compliance.
- Proven experience managing accounting and CRM systems.
- Strong communication skills and ability to engage with Board and stakeholders.
Essential Functions
- Develop and execute financial strategies that directly support the YMCA’s mission and strategic priorities.
- Develop and oversee budgets, forecasts, and long-term financial plans, ensuring resources are allocated to maximize community impact.
- Advise the CEO and Board on financial performance, risks, and opportunities, always with a focus on advancing the Y’s cause.
- Ensure timely and accurate financial reporting
- Oversee all accounting functions, including fund accounting for restricted and unrestricted funds, with transparency and integrity.
- Manage treasury, and cash flow operations.
- Ensure grant compliance, accurate reporting, and adherence to donor restrictions to build trust with funders and stakeholders.
- Maintain strong internal controls and manage annual audits in accordance with GAAP and nonprofit standards.
- Prepare and present financial reports to the Board and Finance, and Audit Committees, fostering open communication and shared understanding.
- Partner with Development to provide financial insights for campaigns, grants, and donor stewardship, supporting the Y’s philanthropic mission.
- Collaborate with the executive team to cultivate community and business relationships that further the Association’s vision.
- Support business development initiatives (new programs/revenue).
- Lead team members to manage CRM systems for member engagement and revenue controls, driving operational efficiency.
- Supervise AR and AP teams, ensuring timely and accurate processing.
- Implement policies and procedures that promote efficiency, accountability, and continuous improvement.
- Build and mentor a high-performing finance team, modeling YMCA values in all interactions.
- Champion the Y’s customer service initiative, “Expect the Best”.
- Foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, and personal growth, encouraging staff to embody the Y’s commitment to service and excellence.
- Serve as a trusted advisor on fiscal policy, investments, and risk management, safeguarding the Y’s assets and reputation.
