Chief Financial Officer (CFO) - Job Description
The organization operates as a not-for-profit entity. The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) functions as a key member of the management team and reports directly to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO).
The CFO is responsible for planning, directing, and controlling the organization's overall financial plans, policies, accounting practices, and relationships with lending institutions and the financial community. This role oversees accounting, budgeting, credit, treasury, tax, real estate, insurance, capital investments, and various administrative functions.
A primary responsibility of the CFO is to ensure that all financial records are maintained in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), utilize financial data to support management decisions, and ensure compliance with all federal and state regulations.
The CFO works closely with the Board of Directors and executive leadership on organizational policies and programs.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee and/or prepare monthly financial statements and reports
- Supervise preparation of annual budgets, capital expenditures, and long-term financial projections
- Review regulatory filings, including federal and state tax returns
- Oversee payroll processes, including tax filings and compliance
- Monitor organizational cash flow
- Supervise monthly bank reconciliations
- Review housing-related financial documentation and required regulatory reports
- Serve as liaison with Board of Directors, external auditors, and finance committees
- Lead annual audit processes and address audit findings
- Oversee grant identification and writing efforts
- Participate in strategic planning and organizational meetings
- Prepare financial reports for board meetings
- Supervise general ledger and financial recordkeeping
- Provide financial analysis and reporting to support executive decision-making
- Maintain banking relationships and secure financing, including lines of credit
- Ensure protection of assets through internal controls, audits, and insurance coverage
- Advise executive leadership on financial risks and opportunities
- Oversee accounts payable and receivable processes
- Develop and implement accounting policies and procedures
- Manage and supervise accounting staff, including scheduling and performance evaluations
- Participate in hiring and development of accounting personnel
- Oversee additional operational departments as assigned
- Supervise financial systems, including software and IT-related accounting functions
- Perform other duties as required
Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting (required)
- CPA designation (preferred)
- Experience in not-for-profit financial management, including fund accounting across multiple entities
Experience
- Minimum 3 years of accounting/finance experience
- Prior supervisory experience preferred
