Job description:
A mission-driven nonprofit organization in Springfield, MA is seeking an experienced Interim CFO to provide strategic and hands-on financial leadership during a transitional period. This consultant will play a critical role in strengthening financial operations, enhancing reporting accuracy, and supporting leadership with data-driven decision-making.
This is a highly visible role requiring both strategic oversight and tactical execution, ideal for a finance leader with nonprofit experience who can quickly assess, stabilize, and improve financial processes.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the budgeting and forecasting process, partnering with executive leadership to ensure alignment with organizational goals
- Perform and oversee account reconciliations, ensuring accuracy across general ledger accounts and resolving discrepancies
- Evaluate current financial workflows and streamline processes to improve efficiency, controls, and reporting timelines
- Support and/or lead the implementation of Bill.com, including process design, training, and integration with existing systems
- Provide audit support, including preparation of schedules, documentation, and coordination with external auditors
- Develop and enhance financial reporting packages for leadership and board stakeholders
- Assess internal controls and recommend improvements to ensure compliance and financial integrity
- Offer strategic financial guidance to support sustainability, cash flow management, and long-term planning
- Partner cross-functionally with program and operational leaders to align financial practices with organizational needs
- QualificationsBachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA strongly preferred)
- 8+ years of progressive financial leadership experience, including prior CFO or senior-level consulting roles
- Nonprofit accounting experience required, including familiarity with fund accounting and grant reporting
- Demonstrated success with process improvement and system implementations (Bill.com or similar tools preferred)
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and internal control frameworks
- Proven ability to manage month-end close, reconciliations, and audit preparation
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to present financial insights to non-financial stakeholders
- Hands-on, roll-up-your-sleeves approach with the ability to operate both strategically and tactically
