About the Position:
Reporting to the CEO and Board of Directors, the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is responsible for managing the financial actions of the organization; they perform effective risk management and plan the organization’s financial strategy. They oversee all divisional fiscal activity, including budgeting, reporting, operating costs and auditing. This role will ensure compliance with legal and regulatory documents and ensure that filings are completed by each divisional financial unit.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Lead accurate, timely and meaningful financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, long-term financial planning, and performance analysis for shareholders, executive leadership, divisional leaders, lenders and the board.
- Develop and maintain financial models, dashboards, KPIs, and reporting tools that provide visibility into divisional performance, project performance, liquidity, profitability, debt capacity, and return on capital.
- Lead financial strategy, capital planning, cash management, liquidity forecasting, working capital management, debt financing, and capital structure decisions to support corporate growth objectives, shareholder priorities, and overall business plans.
- Manage banking relationships, lead financing negotiations, and ensure compliance with lender reporting requirements, covenants, security requirements, and other financing obligations.
- Provide financial leadership across the company’s vertically integrated operations, including home building, land development, construction, sales, leasing, operations, and long-term asset ownership.
- Work with shareholders and executive leadership to assess strategic opportunities, including land acquisitions, development projects, acquisitions, joint ventures, partnerships, financing opportunities, and other growth initiatives.
- Lead tax strategy and corporate structuring in collaboration with external advisors, including tax-efficient planning for GST / HST, corporate income tax, property tax, intercompany transactions, shareholders distributions, acquisitions, dispositions, financing arrangements, and development projects.
- Establish and maintain strong financial controls, policies, approval authorities, segregation of duties, payment controls, system access controls, fraud prevention processes, and compliance procedures across the organization.
- Provide strategic oversight to IT systems and IT initiatives to improve systems, automation, cybersecurity awareness, data integrity, scalability, and operational effectiveness.
- Support the management of risk and litigation matters in collaboration with legal counsel, insurers and executive leadership, including assessing financial exposure, reporting implications, insurance coverage, controls and mitigation strategies.
- Lead, mentor and develop divisional Controllers, Senior Accountants, and Finance team members to strengthen reporting, controls, analysis, accountability, and business partnership across the company.
- Lead corporate governance best practices, support board and committee reporting, prepare financial review materials, and actively participate in board, shareholder, lender and executive leadership meetings.
- Coordinate with external auditors, tax advisors, legal counsel, lenders, insurance advisors, and other professional advisors as required.
Skills, Qualifications and Experience:
- Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation required
- Post-graduate degree in Business, Accounting, Finance or related field is desired.
- Ten (10) or more years of executive management experience as a financial leader in a medium-to-large organization, with proven or demonstrated leadership abilities is required.
- Experience working in the real estate or construction industry and/or healthcare industry would be an asset.
- Thorough understanding of accounting principles is required.
- Understanding of local, provincial, and federal workplace compliance regulations, ordinances, and legislation requirements preferred.
- Knowledge of accounting and finance software such as Dynamics365, Sage, CaseWare, Concur, etc.
- Excellent understanding of Canadian tax laws and regulatory requirements including GST, payroll taxes and construction specific tax issues.
