The Role
The Chief Financial Officer serves as a strategic partner to the President/CEO, Board of Directors, and senior leadership, providing executive-level financial guidance that strengthens the organization's long-term sustainability and mission impact. This role translates financial data into strategy, shapes organizational direction, and ensures resources are managed with integrity and transparency.
The CFO oversees fiscal stewardship, financial reporting, regulatory compliance, and forward-looking planning across the organization, while strengthening systems and supporting cross-functional collaboration that positions the organization for long-term stability and growth.
What You'll Do
Strategic Leadership
Serve as a trusted advisor to executive leadership and the Board on financial strategy, sustainability, and risk management. Translate financial data into insights that guide major decisions and long-range planning. Champion a culture of stewardship, accountability, and transparency.
Accounting & Financial Management
Oversee all accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, payroll, and internal controls. Ensure timely, accurate financial close processes. Maintain accounting systems and structures that support meaningful reporting. Ensure compliance with GAAP, internal policy, and grant requirements. Monitor cash flow and provide forecasting and scenario planning.
Financial Reporting & Board Support
Prepare financial statements and executive summaries for leadership and the Board. Present financial trends, risks, and opportunities clearly to support governance and strategic discussion. Maintain organized historical financial records and support Board committees with financial guidance.
Audit, Compliance & Risk Management
Lead the annual audit process as primary liaison with external auditors. Prepare audit worksheets and supporting documentation. Implement recommendations that strengthen controls and reduce risk. Ensure timely, accurate filing of required financial compliance documentation.
Budget Planning & Organizational Stewardship
Lead the annual budgeting process in partnership with department leaders and executive leadership, aligning financial planning with strategic priorities. Provide budget monitoring, variance analysis, and financial guidance throughout the year. Build financial models and forecasts that support sound decision-making.
Development & Mission Support
Serve as an engaged member of the Executive Team. Support the development/fundraising function with financial reporting and reconciliation. Collaborate on fundraising initiatives and donor stewardship, ensuring financial practices reflect accountability and trust.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
Partner with leaders across the organization to strengthen internal controls and improve finance systems. Provide financial insight to support strategic initiatives. Build organizational understanding of budget accountability and its connection to mission outcomes.
What You Bring
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required; CPA strongly preferred
- Minimum of 10 years of progressive financial leadership experience, with significant nonprofit financial management experience including budget development, audit preparation, and grant compliance
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards, including fund accounting
- Proficiency in accounting software, Excel, and financial modeling tools
- Experience with payroll systems and benefit-related financial administration
- Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills, with the ability to present complex financial information clearly to varied audiences
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities with accuracy and sound judgment
- Strong leadership skills with a commitment to team development and continuous improvement
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion in sensitive matters
