Whitecap Search is seeking an experienced financial leader to join a mission-driven nonprofit organization as an Interim CFO. This role is pivotal in guiding the organization through a financial transformation from a primarily grant-funded model to a diversified revenue approach. The ideal candidate will be a hands-on leader with a strong background in federal grants and nonprofit financial management, ready to provide strategic insights and operational support.

Whitecap Search is representing an established nonprofit organization that has been operational for over 50 years. With approximately 31 employees and an $8 million annual budget, the organization is expanding its revenue model to include consulting services, SaaS solutions, donations, and endowment income.
Responsibilities
- Lead all accounting and financial operations, including budgeting, forecasting, reporting, cash management, and internal controls.
- Oversee federal grant accounting, compliance, reporting, and audit requirements.
- Develop financial models and projections across grants, SaaS, consulting, donations, and endowment revenue.
- Support SaaS and consulting pricing, revenue recognition, and profitability analysis.
- Provide real-time financial insights to leadership, project owners, and the Finance Committee.
- Manage and develop a finance and accounting team of approximately four employees.
- Evaluate current systems and processes, including QuickBooks Online and Excel, and identify opportunities to improve forecasting and reporting capabilities.
- Oversee HR, IT operations, cybersecurity, and other administrative functions.
- Partner closely with the CEO and Finance Committee on financial strategy and organizational growth.
Requirements
- Active CPA required; MBA and/or bachelor's degree in accounting or finance strongly preferred.
- Significant experience with federal grants and nonprofit accounting.
- Understanding of SaaS business models, consulting revenue, pricing, and revenue recognition.
- Experience leading financial operations within a smaller, entrepreneurial, or startup-style environment.
- Hands-on experience with QuickBooks Online and Excel.
- Proven success building forecasting models, financial projections, and measurable KPIs.
- Experience managing audits, compliance, internal controls, and cross-functional operations.
- Ability to work Eastern Time hours; West Coast candidates will not be considered.
Schedule and Logistics
- Fully remote.
- Eastern Time business hours.
- True temp-to-permanent opportunity, with potential conversion after approximately three to six months based on performance.
- Background check required, including employment and credit history.
- Interview process includes a joint virtual interview with the CEO and Chair of the Finance Committee.
- Immediate interview availability and an ASAP start are preferred.
