About Us
Financially SMART is a fractional CFO and outsourced accounting firm built for one industry: wealth management. We work exclusively with RIAs, hybrid firms, and independent advisory practices — roughly 35 of them across the country — handling their books, their numbers, and the strategic decisions that come out of those numbers.
We're not a compliance shop that emails financials on the 20th and disappears. Our clients are business owners who are great at advising clients and, in most cases, have never had a real finance function of their own. We are that function. We also built FinSights AI, our own QuickBooks-integrated analytics platform, so our advisors walk into every client conversation with live dashboards, AUM and advisor-level profitability, forecasting, and peer benchmarking already in hand.
Thirteen people and growing fast. This is a key seat.
The Role
You'll own a book of 15–20 wealth management clients as their fractional CFO — full-time, on our payroll, with one book of clients and one employer. You are the relationship, the strategic voice, and the person accountable for everything that goes out the door with your name on it.
You will not be doing the bookkeeping. Every client you own is supported by a dedicated pod — a bookkeeper and a senior accountant who handle the close, reconciliations, payroll entries, and reporting prep. Your job is to direct that work, pressure-test it, and then translate it into advice the owner actually acts on.
This is a proactive seat, not a reactive one. If a client is surprised by something in their financials, that's a miss.
What You'll Own
- Monthly advisory meetings with every client in your book — reviewing results, explaining variances, and setting the agenda for what's next. You run the meeting; you don't just attend it.
- Strategic guidance across the year — budgets and forecasts, comp and commission structures, hiring plans, pricing and fee analysis, cash flow and distributions, buy-in and succession scenarios, M&A and tuck-in modeling, profitability by advisor and by household.
- Quality control on deliverables — you review the financial package before the client sees it. You're accountable for accuracy, timeliness, and whether it actually answers the question the client has.
- Directing your pod — setting priorities for your bookkeeper and senior accountant, clearing roadblocks, and making sure close deadlines hold.
- Having a pulse on your clients at all times — knowing what's happening in their business before they tell you, flagging risk early, and spotting the opportunity they haven't asked about yet.
- Retention and growth — clients stay because of their CFO. You'll also surface expanded scope where it genuinely helps them.
Who We're Looking For
Required:
- 7+ years in accounting or finance, with real ownership of client or business unit relationships
- Strong technical accounting foundation — you can read a P&L and balance sheet critically, catch what's wrong, and explain why it matters in plain English
- Experience building budgets, forecasts, and financial models from scratch
- Genuine comfort in front of business owners. You're personable, direct, and you can hold a strategic conversation with someone who is smart, busy, and skeptical of consultants. This is not a supporting-cast role.
- Ability to manage 15–20 concurrent relationships without dropping balls
- Advanced Excel
- QuickBooks Online proficiency
Strongly preferred:
- Direct experience with wealth management firms, RIAs, broker-dealer affiliations, or insurance/annuity businesses — you know what AUM-based revenue, grid payouts, trail commissions, and advisor comp structures actually look like
- CPA, CMA, or MBA
- Prior fractional CFO, client advisory services (CAS), or controller-to-multiple-clients experience
What will make you successful here: You like owning outcomes. You'd rather make the call than wait for direction. You're the person clients text when something big is happening — not because you asked them to, but because you've earned it.
Why This Seat
- A defined book of clients in one niche — you'll get deep, not wide, and your expertise compounds fast
- A real support team under you from day one, not a promise of help later
- FinSights AI gives you analytics most fractional CFOs are building by hand in Excel every month
- Direct access to firm leadership and real influence on how we deliver
