Chief Financial and Operating Officer
Boston, Massachusetts - 4 Days Onsite / 1 Day Remote
A nonprofit is seeking a mission-focused, seasoned, strategic and process-minded senior executive with 15+ years of broad nonprofit financial management and operations experience to serve as Chief Financial and Operating Officer. You will serve as a key member of the senior leadership team, partnering with the President and CEO and Board of Directors to guide financial management and strategy, HR management, compliance, and operations across the organization and its affiliated entity.
This hands-on leader will supervise a small staff and regularly work with the Board of Directors, especially the Audit, Investment, and Finance Committees. The CFOO will play a critical role in identifying, recommending, and implementing new processes, technologies, and systems to improve operations across the organization. In the absence of the President and CEO, you will oversee all operations.
The Role:
Financial Management & Strategy
- Provide comprehensive financial and accounting oversight to the organization and its affiliated entity
- Develop and administer all financial plans, business policies, and accounting practices
- Coordinate and lead the annual audit process
- Spearhead the annual budget and planning process; update forecasts as needed
- Manage all accounting functions and monitor cash and cash flows
- Prepare, analyze, and present accurate and timely financial reports
- Ensure proper reconciliation of all balance sheet accounts
- Partner with the Accountant to oversee payroll, payables, and employee compensation/benefits/PTO
- Oversee financial, program, and grant accounting, ensuring alignment of grant expenditures and budgets
- Manage financial investments in partnership with the Investment Committee
- Communicate and present critical financial matters to various audiences
- Develop processes for efficient finance workflow across the organization
- Lead the Accountant and outsourced A/R partner in financial matters
HR Management
- Partner with HR Consultant on the full employee life cycle: recruiting, onboarding, retention, performance management
- Procure, manage, and monitor employee benefits
- Conduct periodic compensation benchmarking for equity
- Review and revise job descriptions, personnel policies, and the handbook
- Lead the performance management process
Compliance
- Ensure financial statements, tax returns, Secretary of State filings, 403(b) filings, and other reporting/registrations are accurate and current
Operations Management
- Oversee risk management; review and negotiate agreements, contracts, leases, and legal documents with outside counsel as needed
- Partner with the President and CEO and pro bono legal counsel to review/draft complex agreements (e.g., gift agreements)
- Build measurement tools to gauge efficiency of internal/external processes
- Track emerging technologies and trends in operations management
Strategic Leadership & Relationship Building
- Partner with the President and CEO on organizational goals, providing expertise on operations projects and systems
- Build strategic relationships with board members, donors, vendors, financial institutions, and other partners
- Support and empower the team toward the mission
- Help the President and CEO grow a world-class organization
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in finance or accounting required; MBA or advanced degree preferred
- Minimum 15 years professional experience; ideally 10 years of executive operational experience
- Exceptional executive presence, business acumen, and presentation skills
- Fun, creative, flexible, and team-oriented
- Able to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
- Supervisory experience and strong management skills
- Excellent written/oral communication; able to translate financial concepts for non-finance colleagues
- Ability to interpret and enforce policy/procedure
- Tech-savvy, with experience selecting and overseeing software implementations (Blackbaud Cloud Management System, Raiser's Edge, Financial Edge)
- Advanced Excel and Blackbaud Financial Edge knowledge strongly preferred
- A CORI background check will be conducted
