Chief Financial Officer (CFO)
Cooperative for Human Services Inc. (CHS)
Location: Lexington, Massachusetts (In-Person)
Position: Full-Time, Executive Leadership
Reports To: President & Chief Executive Officer
About Cooperative for Human Services:
Founded in 1981, Cooperative for Human Services (CHS) provides vital residential and community-based services to adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities across Northeastern Massachusetts. At CHS, our philosophy is straightforward: our financial resources, technology, and organizational infrastructure exist to drive exceptional care and unlock greater opportunities for the people we serve. As we enter our next chapter of growth, we are seeking a strategic, future-oriented, and collaborative Chief Financial Officer to serve as a key partner in shaping our future.
The Opportunity:
This is not a traditional back-office Finance role. As CFO, you will serve as a core thought partner to the President & CEO, Executive Leadership Team, and Board of Directors. You will balance two essential pillars of financial leadership: prudence and possibility—knowing when to mitigate risk and exercise restraint, and when to leverage calculated risk to expand our mission. In addition to driving financial strategy, you will provide executive oversight for Information Technology and Facilities, aligning these three foundational functions to build a resilient, modern infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities:
Strategic Financial Leadership & Governance
- Act as a key strategic advisor to the CEO, Executive Leadership Team, and Board of Directors on long-term strategy, risk, and resource allocation.
- Direct multi-year financial forecasting, scenario planning, budgeting, cash-flow management, and capital allocation.
- Evaluate major growth initiatives, infrastructure investments, and potential contracts with attention to risk, ROI, and mission alignment.
Finance, Accounting & Compliance Oversight
- Maintain total oversight of accounting operations, financial reporting, internal controls, treasury, banking relationships, insurance, and annual audits.
- Ensure regulatory compliance, particularly with Massachusetts human services funding, state contract management, and Uniform Financial Statements and Independent Auditor's Report (UFR) requirements.
- Develop and mentor the internal Finance team, elevating operational standards and team capacity.
Executive Leadership of IT & Facilities
- Provide strategic oversight of Information Technology, driving investments in systems integration, cybersecurity, vendor management, and data-informed decision-making.
- Lead executive stewardship of Facilities and capital assets, ensuring proactive capital planning, property maintenance, and physical asset sustainability.
Key Priorities for the Role:
- Strengthen Decision Support: Elevate multi-year forecasting, scenario modeling, and data usage across business units to guide strategic decisions.
- Integrate Systems: Harmonize Finance, IT, and Facilities operations to streamline workflows and better serve front-line teams.
- Modernize Infrastructure: Expand technology platforms to enhance data transparency, security, and reporting accuracy.
Who We Are Looking For:
You are an executive who seamlessly moves between financial details and big-picture strategy. You understand that in a mission-driven organization, financial strength is not the ultimate destination—it is the engine that allows us to invest in our workforce, innovate services, and expand our impact.
Qualifications:
- Experience: 15+ years of progressive financial leadership experience in nonprofit organizations, with proven senior-level scope in complex, multi-faceted environments.
- Education & Credentials: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field required. CPA, MBA, or advanced relevant degree strongly preferred.
- Domain Knowledge: Strong mastery of GAAP, nonprofit accounting, budgeting, forecasting, audit compliance, and treasury.
- Sector Experience: Deep familiarity with non-profit human services, healthcare, or state-funded regulated environments. Experience with Massachusetts Human-Services state contracts and UFR reporting is highly advantageous.
- Infrastructure Scope: Demonstrated success overseeing or strategically aligning IT, facilities, capital asset planning, or administrative operations.
Why Join Us?
- Executive Impact: Become a primary driver of strategy during an important growth phase in our 40-year history.
- Mission-Driven Purpose: Directly see the human impact of your financial stewardship every day.
- Collaborative Culture: Join a passionate, supportive leadership team dedicated to executive excellence and human dignity.
