Established in 1988, AASK has a strong history of improving the lives of Arizona’s foster children by ensuring that every child has someone who cares. AASK’s programs make a significant difference in the lives of Arizona’s foster care children.
The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is responsible for all financial matters of Aid to Adoption of Special Kids Arizona (AASK) and oversees the Finance and Human Resource functions. AASK is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with an annual budget of $10.2 million.
The CFO partners with the senior leadership team to meet the organization’s challenges and achieve its goals. The CFO must demonstrate an understanding of and a commitment to AASK’s mission and its programs. The CFO will support the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and senior management team to assure the agency’s programs–current and proposed–sustain, and do not waiver from, the Agency’s mission. The CFO will partner with senior management to cultivate an Agency culture that is respectful and appreciative of the families and children AASK serves.
The CFO reports to and is supervised by the CEO.
Supervisory Responsibilities
The CFO supervises an Accounting staff of three and the Human Resource Coordinator.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
● Oversee the structure and processes necessary to manage the organization's current financial activities.
● Maintain and update AASK's financial and accounting policies and procedures in accordance with organizational requirements and goals.
● Oversee internal controls, including purchasing, cash management, and coordination of the annual external audit.
● Evaluate and refine departmental workflow to ensure efficiency and accuracy,
● Prepare and monitor the AASK annual operating budget and cash flow analysis.
● Provide Program directors with historical financial data for their programs and assist the Program directors in building and monitoring program budgets for inclusion in the Agency’s annual budget.
● Oversee the preparation of monthly financial reports and interpret the reports for the CEO, , Board of Directors/Finance Committee, and senior management team.
● Work with Program directors to identify the causes of variances between actual results and budgeted amounts for program revenue and expenses.
● Staff to the Finance Committee of the Board.
● Oversee Billing/Accounts Receivable and collection efforts to assure claims are filed timely and denied claims are resolved within the contract(s) time limits.
● Oversee preparation of grant budgets and fulfillment reports.
● Oversee the preparation of financial information needed to respond to Request for Proposals (RFPs).
● Oversee the coordination and activities of independent auditors, ensuring all Form 990, 401(k), and 457(b) compliance requirements are met.
● Ensure that the preparation of the annual financial statements is in accordance with U.S. GAAP for non-profits and that all required supplementary schedules and information are provided in accordance with federal, state, and other applicable regulations.
● Ensure financial reporting required by contracts with the State, Tribal governments, and grantor organizations is timely and in accordance with contract requirements.
● Oversee Human Resource initiatives and monitor compliance with employment laws and regulations.
● Develop, implement, and maintain Human Resource policies and procedures to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations.
● Administer compensation, benefits, and leave programs, ensuring they are competitive and equitable.
● Develop and implement HR strategies that align with the Agency’s mission and operational goals.
● Oversee the entire Agency talent lifecycle, including recruitment, onboarding, performance management, training, development, and succession planning for a diverse and competent staff.
● Collaborate with the CEO and senior leadership to resolve employee disputes, address disciplinary matters, and conduct investigations, while fostering a positive, respectful and engaged work environment.
● Oversee the maintenance of accurate employee records and ensure efficient daily workflows within the Human Resources department
● Work with the Agency employee benefits broker to secure an employee benefits package that includes competitive premiums as well as a selection of multiple levels of coverage for medical, dental, vision, and voluntary insurance benefits.
● Support the CEO and Program staff in preparing responses to Requests for Proposals (RFPs) from governmental and donor organizations.
● Secure proposals for Agency commercial insurance on an annual basis.Assure that the insurance requirements of government and donor organization agreements are met by the insurance coverage obtained.
● Secure and maintain Agency banking relationships to meet the agency's needs.
● Oversee and support the maintenance of AASK buildings and offices to assure safe environments for staff and visitors.
● As needed, secure competitive proposals for Agency commercial and employee benefits insurance brokers, 401(k) advisors/TPAs/platforms, payroll service providers, building services, and other Agency services.
● The CFO will work with the CEO to look ahead at the evolving external and internal environment, identifying opportunities and obstacles that may have either a positive or negative impact on the Agency’s finances. CFO will strategize with the CEO to identify, research, and project potential responses to the opportunities and obstacles.
● Manage finance and human resources staff, including hiring, training, coaching, supervision, and evaluation.
● Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and streamlined workflow to provide “customer-friendly” support to Program staff, senior management, Board, and Finance Committee.
● Work closely with the CEO to ensure AASK internal human resource policies and practices are administered consistently across the Agency.
Qualifications

● Excellent verbal and written communication, as well as strong organizational skills.
● Understanding of US GAAP and non-profit accounting, and non-profit financial reporting.
● Ability to foster collaboration with senior leadership and effectively communicate policy changes to staff.
● Ability to relate to individuals at all levels of the Agency and to be sensitive to employee morale and organizational needs.
● The capacity to identify innovative solutions, benchmark practices, and provide HR guidance that supports strategic organizational objectives.
● Up-to-date knowledge of employment laws and regulations to ensure full compliance with all applicable agencies.
● Ability to work successfully in a dynamic, fast-paced environment characterized by growth and change.
● Strong work ethic, self-motivation, good sense of humor, high energy level, and sincere motivation.
● Ability to qualify for and maintain a Level 1 Fingerprint Clearance Card from the Arizona Department of Public Safety.
● Must be at least 21 and have a valid Arizona driver's license, maintain proof of automobile insurance, and car registration.
● Must have adequate transportation to travel between three AASK buildings and to external meetings across the Valley as the needs of the Agency require.
● All hires are screened using a request for a search of the central registry for background check, a criminal history self-disclosure, and a pre-employment drug screen.
Education and Experience
● BS in Accounting, Business, or related field. (CPA a plus).
● Minimum five years of executive-level non-profit experience.
● Experience with supervision of staff and interactions with Board-level committees.
● Knowledge of and understanding of accounting, budgeting, and HRIS software.
