We are seeking an experienced financial leader to serve as a Part-Time Chief Financial Officer (CFO) who can provide strategic, disciplined financial oversight while working remotely most of the time. This role is designed for someone with substantive finance and accounting leadership experience—ideally with exposure to professional services or closely held enterprises—who may be semi-retired or seeking flexible engagement rather than a full 40-hour schedule.
Role OverviewThe CFO will partner with firm leadership to build and maintain sound financial infrastructure, guide financial planning, and provide operational financial insights that support firm growth and profitability. While this position is not full time, it demands ownership, judgment, and a proactive approach to financial matters.
Key ResponsibilitiesFinancial Leadership & Strategy
- Advise firm leadership on financial performance, planning, and resource allocation
- Build and maintain financial models, forecasts, and scenario analyses appropriate for a dynamic law firm
- Provide strategic input on profit planning, overhead control, and compensation structures
Accounting & Reporting
- Coordinate accounting functions (general ledger, billing, collections, payroll)
- Ensure accurate and timely financial reporting (monthly P&L, balance sheet, cash flows)
- Implement and maintain internal controls suitable for a law firm environment
Cash Management & Profitability
- Monitor cash flow, distributions, working capital, and firm liquidity
- Analyze realization rates, billing efficiency, and collections improvement
- Deliver actionable insights on matter profitability and overhead impact
Systems & Infrastructure
- Evaluate and optimize financial systems and reporting tools
- Promote process standardization and financial discipline across the firm
- Coordinate with outside accountants on tax compliance and audits
Ideal Candidate Profile- 10+ years of senior finance leadership experience (CFO, Controller, Finance Director)
- Strong accounting foundation (CPA or equivalent experience preferred)
- Comfortable with complex revenue recognition, cash-based accounting, and professional services economics
- Highly self-directed and capable of operating with limited day-to-day supervision
- Good communicator and trusted advisor mindset
- Experience in a law firm, professional services firm, investment firm, or closely related environment preferred
Work Structure & Compensation- Part-time / consulting-oriented engagement designed for ~15-25 hours/week (average)
- Flexibility to work remotely (~80% remote) with occasional in-person collaboration
- Compensation up to $80,000 annually, commensurate with experience and time commitment
