A Colorado Law Firm is a forward-thinking organization, with a strong emphasis on innovative financial management and strategic growth. We are seeking a skilled CFO with expertise in financial management and marketing, alongside experience in the legal or medical industry.
Position Overview:
The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) will play a critical role in developing and implementing financial strategies that align with our overall business goals. The ideal candidate will bring at least 5 years of experience in financial management within the Law or Medical industry, combined with a solid accounting background.
Responsibilities:
Strategic:
- Develop and execute the firm’s financial strategy aligned with organizational goals, litigation strategy, and growth initiatives.
- Advise the Managing Partner / Executive Team on financial performance, revenue forecasting, and long‑term capitalization.
- Lead annual budgeting and multi‑year financial planning with a focus on case lifecycle dynamics and settlement forecasting.
- Own and follow through on special projects as needed
Accounting & Tax:
- Lead GL, month-end close, consolidations, revenue recognition, and GAAP compliance.
- Deliver timely, accurate financial statements; manage annual reviews/audits and tax-prep coordination.
- Build rolling forecasts, annual budgets, cash flow modeling, and scenario analyses.
- Establish and enforce controls for client trust/IOLTA accounts, escrow, and suspense activity.
- Oversee case settlements lifecycle: settlement intake → lien verification → fee allocation → disbursement → 1099 reporting.
- Ensure compliant, auditable settlement disbursement workflows (client, provider, and firm fee distributions).
- Oversee accuracy for lien resolution, medical pay/med‑pay, and regulatory/timing requirements.
- Own 1099‑NEC/MISC processes, W‑9 collection, backup withholding when applicable, and e‑filing readiness.
- Ensure accurate and timely local and state tax filings
- Manage all business insurance programs such as cyber, professional liability, general liability, workers comp etc.
- Maintain internal controls, positive pay, treasury management, banking relationships, and merchant processing oversight.
- Ensure adherence to state bar trust accounting rules and applicable ethics requirements.
- Lead and mentor Accounting (AP/AR, payroll, billing/collections) and Case Settlements teams; set SLAs and KPIs.
- Optimize systems and data flow across accounting, case management, and banking platforms; drive automation and scale.
- Support executive decision-making (unit economics, staffing models, office expansion, vendor strategy).
- Present monthly financials, KPIs, risks, and opportunities to executive leadership.
- Translate complex financial topics into clear, actionable insights for non-finance stakeholders.
- Oversee all accounting functions including payroll, AP/AR, tax planning, and auditing, ensuring compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.
- Own profitability and variance analysis, assessing where additional profit efficiencies can be achieved.
- Own and follow through on special projects as needed
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, or a related field (MBA, CPA, or CMA preferred).
- At least 5 years of experience in a CFO or senior financial management role, particularly in the Law or Medical/Healthcare industry.
- Demonstrated success in financial modeling, budgeting, forecasting.
- Experience with financial tools, ERP systems, and accounting systems.
- Solid leadership and communication skills with a collaborative approach to working cross-functionally.
- Ability to handle strategic decision-making related to financial investments, business expansion, and M&A.
