Role Description
The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is responsible for the overall financial leadership of the credit union, ensuring strong financial performance, regulatory compliance, and long-term financial sustainability. This executive role oversees all aspects of financial management including accounting, financial reporting, budgeting, asset-liability management (ALM), investments, liquidity management, and financial planning.
For San Antonio Citizens Credit Union, the CFO will perform both strategic CFO responsibilities and controller-level oversight, ensuring accurate financial reporting, strong internal controls, and sound balance sheet management. The CFO works closely with the CEO, executive leadership team, and Board of Directors to guide financial strategy and support organizational growth.
The CFO plays a key role in aligning financial stewardship with the mission of the credit union while maintaining safety and soundness in accordance with expectations from the National Credit Union Administration.
KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY
Contribution to Credit Union Goals
Support the credit union’s long-term financial strength and sustainability by providing sound financial leadership, strategic insight, and strong stewardship of the organization’s financial resources. Ensure the credit union maintains financial stability, regulatory compliance, and responsible growth while supporting the organization’s mission of serving members and communities. Provide financial guidance that enables Executive Leadership and the Board of Directors to make informed strategic decisions that support the credit union’s continued success.
Essential Duties
Financial Strategy and Leadership
- Provide strategic financial leadership to support the credit union’s long-term growth and stability.
- Serve as a key advisor to the CEO, Executive Team and Board of Directors on financial strategy and performance.
- Develop and execute financial plans aligned with the credit union’s strategic goals.
- Analyze financial performance and identify opportunities for improvement.
Financial Reporting and Accounting Oversight
- Oversee all accounting functions including general ledger management, financial reporting, and reconciliations.
- Ensure timely and accurate preparation of financial statements and regulatory reports.
- Maintain strong internal controls and accounting practices.
- Ensure compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
Budgeting and Financial Planning
- Lead the annual budgeting process and long-term financial forecasting.
- Monitor performance against budget and provide financial analysis to leadership.
- Develop financial models to support strategic decision-making.
Asset Liability Management (ALM)
- Oversee balance sheet strategy including interest rate risk management.
- Manage the credit union’s ALM process and modeling.
- Monitor interest rate risk exposure and recommend appropriate strategies.
- Work with management and the board to maintain acceptable risk levels.
- Provide financial risk analysis and balance sheet insights to Executive Leadership and the Board of Directors to support informed decision making.
Investment and Liquidity Management
- Oversee the credit union’s investment portfolio.
- Ensure liquidity levels support operational and strategic needs.
- Develop investment strategies consistent with the credit union’s risk tolerance and policies.
Regulatory Reporting and Compliance
- Ensure timely and accurate regulatory filings and financial reporting.
- Maintain compliance with regulatory expectations and financial reporting standards.
- Serve as a key financial contact during regulatory examinations and audits.
Audit and Internal Controls
- Coordinate and support external and internal audits.
- Ensure appropriate responses to audit findings.
- Maintain a strong internal control environment to safeguard assets and ensure financial accuracy.
Financial Analysis and Performance Monitoring
- Provide regular financial analysis to Executive Leadership and the Board of Directors.
- Monitor key performance indicators including Net interest margin, Efficiency ratio, Net worth ratio, Return on assets, Loan and deposit growth
- Identify trends and opportunities to improve financial performance.
Board Financial Reporting and Governance
- Prepare and present financial reports and analysis to the CEO, Executive Leadership team, and Board of Directors.
- Provide financial insight and recommendations that support informed decision-making and responsible governance.
- Support board committees, including those responsible for financial oversight, asset liability management, and investment strategy.
Leadership and Team Development
- Provide leadership and oversight for the accounting and finance team.
- Develop team capabilities and ensure strong financial expertise within the department.
- Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
Strategic Collaboration
- Partner with Executive Leadership to support strategic initiatives.
- Evaluate financial implications of new products, services, and growth opportunities.
- Support operational leaders with financial insight and analysis.
- Participate as an active member of the Executive Leadership Team, contributing to organizational strategy, decision-making, and the overall leadership of the credit union.

Education
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field required.
- Master’s degree in business administration or finance preferred.
Certifications
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) strongly preferred.
- Candidates who do not hold a CPA designation are required to possess a Certified Management Accountant (CMA) credential.
Experience
- 8–12 years of progressive financial leadership experience in financial services.
- Experience in accounting, financial reporting, and balance sheet management.
- Experience working with executive leadership teams and boards.
- Experience in credit union or community banking environment strongly preferred.
