Position Summary
The Controller/CFO is responsible for leading the financial operations of the company, including accounting, financial reporting, cash flow management, and strategic financial planning. This role ensures the financial health of the organization, supports operational decision-making, and drives profitability across all construction projects. The position works closely with executive leadership, project teams, and external partners to optimize financial performance and manage risk.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Leadership & Strategy
· Lead the company’s financial strategy, planning, and analysis
· Provide strategic guidance to executive leadership on financial performance, risks, and opportunities
· Develop and monitor key financial metrics, including profitability, backlog, and cash flow
· Support long-term growth planning, including expansion, capital investments, and financing
Accounting & Financial Reporting
· Oversee all accounting functions, including general ledger, job cost accounting, and financial reporting
· Ensure timely and accurate preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements
· Maintain compliance with GAAP and industry-specific accounting practices (e.g., percentage-of-completion)
· Manage audits, tax filings, and relationships with external accountants
Job Costing & Project Financial Oversight
· Oversee job cost systems to ensure accurate tracking of project performance
· Work with Project Managers to monitor budgets, forecasts, WIP schedules, and cost-to-complete projections
· Review and analyze project margins, identifying risks and opportunities
· Ensure proper revenue recognition and contract accounting
Cash Flow & Treasury Management
· Manage company cash flow, forecasting, and working capital
· Oversee billing processes, including progress billing and retainage
· Monitor accounts receivable and payable to maintain healthy cash cycles
· Manage banking relationships, lines of credit, and financing arrangements
Risk Management & Compliance
· Oversee financial risk management, including bonding capacity and insurance requirements
· Manage relationships with sureties and support bond program growth
· Ensure compliance with contractual, legal, and regulatory requirements
· Implement and maintain internal controls and financial policies
Leadership & Team Development
· Lead and develop accounting and finance team members
· Establish efficient processes and systems to support company growth
· Collaborate with operations, project management, and executive teams
· Drive accountability and financial discipline across the organization
Qualifications
Education
· Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (required)
· CPA or MBA (preferred)
Experience
· 10–20+ years of progressive financial leadership experience
· Experience in commercial construction or a related industry (strongly preferred)
· Proven experience with job costing, WIP reporting, and construction financials
· Experience working with sureties, banks, and external auditors
Skills & Competencies
· Strong knowledge of construction accounting principles (e.g., percentage-of-completion, WIP schedules)
· Advanced financial analysis and forecasting skills
· Strong leadership and communication abilities
· High level of integrity and attention to detail
· Proficiency in accounting and ERP systems (e.g., Sage 300, Viewpoint Vista, CMiC)
· Ability to translate financial data into actionable business insights
