About CHARITYacCOUNTS!
CHARITYacCOUNTS! is a specialized finance partner to purpose-driven organizations, providing outsourced bookkeeping, controllership, and CFO services. We work with charities, nonprofits, and other mission-led entities that require strong financial leadership but do not need a full-time CFO.
About the Opportunity
We are hiring a Fractional Chief Financial Officer to join our team and provide senior-level financial leadership to one of our nonprofit clients. A central focus of this role will be supporting this organization through a complex, multi-year capital and growth initiative, while also overseeing strategic finance for one or more additional clients as capacity allows.
You will sit “above” the nonprofit's client's existing strong internal finance resources, providing board-ready reporting, strategic analysis, and oversight of financing and funder obligations.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic and Governance Reporting
- Develop and present clear, decision-ready financial reports and dashboards for the organization's CEO and Boards/Finance Committees (e.g., monthly/quarterly packages, risk-focused narratives, and scenario summaries).
- Prepare briefing notes and presentations to support major decisions such as capital investments, financing options, service expansion, and long-range planning.
Capital / Major Initiative Oversight
- Act as the senior financial lead on a large, multi-year initiative that includes an external financing facility and detailed third-party reporting.
- Oversee high-level compliance with financing and funder requirements (e.g., covenant monitoring, financial ratio tracking, scheduled reports), working with the client’s existing finance team and financial modeller.
- Review and challenge financial models and projections prepared by others, help test assumptions, and support “what if” analysis for leadership and the Board.
Planning, Risk, and Advisory
- Lead multi-year financial planning and forecasting for assigned clients, integrating operating and project-related impacts.
- Identify key financial risks (e.g., liquidity, covenant, funding, interest rate, or program-related risks) and recommend mitigation strategies for client leadership.
- Serve as a trusted advisor to CEO and senior teams, helping them understand trade-offs and options in plain language.
Team Leadership and Collaboration
- Mentor and support client-side finance leaders (e.g., Controllers, Directors of Finance) to strengthen internal reporting, controls, and planning processes.
- Work closely with CHARITYacCOUNTS! colleagues to coordinate deliverables and ensure consistent, high-quality service across your client portfolio.
What You Bring
- CPA Ontario designation and significant experience in senior finance roles (CFO, VP Finance, Director of Finance or equivalent). May also consider other Canadian CPA designations if you are willing to become certified in Ontario.
- Demonstrated success producing and presenting board-level financial reporting and analysis in nonprofit, charitable, broader public sector, or similarly regulated environments.
- Direct experience with charities or nonprofits is strongly preferred.
- Experience overseeing financing and stakeholder/funder reporting for major projects or initiatives (capital, infrastructure, or similarly complex undertakings), including comfort with covenants and external reporting calendars.
- Strong ability to translate detailed financial information into clear, concise insights and recommendations for non-financial leaders and Boards.
- Enjoyment of part time senior fractional advisory work, where you contribute strategic insights to a non profit organization's CEO and their leadership team..
Role Structure & Compensation
Employee role with CHARITYacCOUNTS!, working on a fractional, part-time basis (for example, several days per month across a defined client portfolio; estimated to be 2 days/week, final allocation to be confirmed).
Flexible, primarily remote work with occasional in-person meetings in the Greater Toronto Area, scheduled in collaboration with clients and our team.
Competitive compensation and employee benefits aligned with the seniority and impact of the position.
