Branch Description:
The Interpretive Sales Branch is central to the Parks Conservancy’s mission, providing both visitor services and interpretive retail experiences to the millions of visitors both locally and globally to the GGNRA annually. Collaborating closely with many partners, including the NPS, Presidio Trust, San Francisco Port Authority, and Golden Gate Bridge District, the branch collectively represents and promotes the enduring value and unique stories of the national parks. Every dollar spent by visitors at our retail locations generates vital funds that support community and youth programming, science, conservation.
Operating ten interpretive retail centers, online sales and wholesale operation, supported by two off-site warehouses, the branch annually sells 2.5 million items that generate over $20 million in gross sales. Through publishing and product development, the Parks Conservancy has developed a reputation for producing placed-based interpretive, high quality and sustainably sourced items sold throughout the Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA). A dedicated team of over 120+ staff members, ranging from directors and managers to designers, developers, back-of-house and front-line personnel, annually guides five million visitors in finding deeper meaning in their national park visit.
Position Overview:
The Director, Business Operations and Supply Chain provides strategic and operational leadership for the back-of-house programs that power the Interpretive Centers and Sales Branch. Reporting to the Vice President of Interpretive Sales, this position directs supply chain operations, warehouse and inventory management, product development operations, financial planning and reporting, and systems collaboration that supports Branch-wide performance. This position holds full profit and loss (P&L) accountability for Business Operations and Supply Chain, with responsibility for annual budgeting, financial forecasting, and performance reporting across the work center.
This position ensures that product moves efficiently from vendor to visitor, that financial performance is visible and actionable, and that systems and processes support a well-run, mission-aligned retail operation. This role works in close collaboration with the
Interpretive Centers and Sales Branch Leadership team to advance the operational effectiveness and data capabilities. Cross-branch collaboration with Finance, People & Culture, and Operations staff - including the Director of Technology Strategy and Data Insights, Director of Facilities and Fleet, Director of Safety and General Counsel - are central expectations of this position.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
Strategic, Financial, and Operational Leadership
- Provide strategic and operational leadership for the Business Operations and Supply Chain work center: supply chain, warehouse, inventory, e-commerce, and financial operations. Ensure alignment of all functions with branch objectives and Parks Conservancy’s mission.
- Develop and maintain multi-year operational roadmaps for supply chain, warehouse operations, and branch financial planning, identifying opportunities to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and increase revenue. Establish policies and procedures that promote effective, consistent, and compliant business practices.
- Leads annual budget development for the Interpretive Retail and Sales Branch, including revenue projections, expense planning, staffing costs, and capital needs, in partnership with Branch leadership. Represent the branch in cross‑organizational discussions related to operations, finance, systems, facilities, and contracts. Direct annual and long‑range budgeting, forecasting, and performance reporting in partnership with branch and Finance leadership.
Supply Chain, Product Operations, and Pricing Strategy
- Direct the end‑to‑end supply chain for Parks Conservancy products, including domestic and international sourcing, vendor management, logistics, quality control, and regulatory compliance. Partner with creative and product development team leads to align sourcing execution, production timelines, quality standards, and cost targets.
- Develop, source and manage vendor and manufacturing relationships to achieve target price ranges, support financial performance and advance Parks Conservancy sustainability and mission-aligned standards.
- Oversee pricing strategy and margin management, monitoring cost of goods, product margins, and market conditions to implement strategies to protect net margin performance. Oversees pricing strategy for Parks Conservancy products in consultation with staff and ensures thoughtful communication of pricing or strategy shifts to retail teams.
- Ensures all products meet applicable regulatory and product safety requirements.
Warehouse, Inventory and Fulfillment Operations Management
- Directs all warehouse operations to ensure safe, efficient, and well-organized management of Parks Conservancy products across both warehouse facilities, including receiving, storage, distribution, and fulfillment for retail, wholesale, and online channels.
- Ensures all Parks Conservancy and partner merchandise is received, managed, and distributed through centralized warehouse operations, maintaining clear accountability for product flow from receipt to sale. Works with the team to strengthen inventory management practices, including standardizing receiving workflows, distribution processes, and inventory controls across all channels.
- Directs fiscal year-end physical inventory in coordination with directors and site managers. Develops and monitors budgets for warehouse operations, including team, facilities, equipment, and supplies.
- Coordinates warehouse lease agreements and equipment maintenance in collaboration with Operations leadership, ensuring facilities are appropriately maintained and support operational needs.
Systems, Technology, and Data Collaboration
- Collaborates closely with the Director, Retail Systems and the Director of Technology Strategy and Data Insights to advance the branch's operational technology and data capabilities, including requirements gathering, evaluation, and planning for POS systems, inventory management and warehouse platforms, and automation tools.
- Provide business requirements and operational input for technology investments, platforms, and automation tools.
- Monitor and utilize operational dashboards and performance metrics to identify trends and drive continuous improvement. Analyzes inventory turns, stock-to-sales ratios, and margin performance by product category and channel, using findings to inform purchasing and pricing decisions.
- Collaborates on system contracts, software agreements, and technology infrastructure needs that support branch operations, working in partnership with organizational technology leadership.
Wholesale and E-Commerce Operations
- Provides strategic direction for the wholesale program, ensuring product selection, margins, and customer relationships support financial and interpretive goals.
- Oversees e-commerce fulfillment operations in coordination with the team, ensuring online orders are processed accurately and efficiently.
- Analyzes wholesale and e-commerce financial performance, identifies growth opportunities, and develops strategies to maximize revenue and operational efficiency.
Team Leadership and Supervision
- Provide leadership, direction, performance management, and professional development support for employees within the Business Operations and Supply Chain unit.
- Directly manage the Director, Retail Systems and Operations, the Director, Retail Inventory, and Product Development Specialist, establishing clear expectations, regular communication, and performance feedback. Provide indirect oversight to warehouse staff, wholesale staff, E-commerce staff, and project-based contributors within the work center.
- Foster a culture of collaboration and accountability; ensure a values‑driven work environment aligned with the Parks Conservancy’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
- Oversees recruiting, hiring, and onboarding for positions within the work center in partnership with People and Culture.
Cross-Branch and Cross-Organization Collaboration and Partnership
- Collaborates closely with Interpretive Centers and Sales Branch Leadership regarding:
- product development direction, ensuring operational capabilities, sourcing timelines, and ensuring budget parameters are aligned with creative vision;
- branch-wide financial planning, staffing forecasting, and performance reporting.
- Partner with Operations Branch regarding technology integration, facilities and warehouse operations, safety compliance, and contracting.
- Serve as primary Finance & Accounting Branch liaison for Retail Branch, coordinating on accounts payable, wire transfers, pre-payment tracking, royalty payments, and financial reconciliation. Partner with Finance & Accounting Branch on budgeting, forecasting, POS system integrity, financial reporting, and audit requirements.

- Deep knowledge of supply chain management, including domestic and international sourcing, vendor management, logistics, and inventory operations.
- Experience operating in retail and/or nonprofit environments with an emphasis on operational efficiency and financial performance.
- Strong negotiation skills with vendors, partners, and service providers.
- Financial & Analytical Acumen
- Strong financial acumen, including experience with budget development, forecasting, modeling, profit and loss management, and performance reporting.
- Proven ability to develop and use operational dashboards and performance metrics to support data‑informed decision making.
- Systems, Technology, and Tools
- Experience collaborating with technology teams on systems requirements, operational technology roadmaps, and POS or inventory management implementations.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel; working knowledge of POS systems, inventory and warehouse platforms, and retail analytics tools.

Education and/or Experience:
- Minimum of ten years of progressive leadership experience in retail operations, supply chain, inventory management, or a related field, with at least five years in a senior leadership role.
- Demonstrated experience managing profit and loss, annual budgeting, and multi-year financial forecasting in a complex organization.
- Experience overseeing warehouse operations and multi-channel distribution, including wholesale and e-commerce fulfillment.
- Experience working in a nonprofit, museum, national park, or mission-driven retail environment is a bonus.

Physical Requirements, Work Environments & Work Location:
- This position is located at the Parks Conservancy’s headquarters in Fort Mason, San Francisco. This position is full-time, and prospective candidates must already be based in or willing to relocate to the San Francisco Bay Area.
- Work is performed in an office setting, including a mix of telework and on-site. This position requires at least 2 days per week on site. Additional on-site days may be required for warehouse visits, site visits, vendor meetings, leadership meeting and branch operations as business needs require.
- Work is performed primarily within an office setting, 6-8 hours per day. At times, the Director, Business Operations & Supply Chain will need to meet our employees at our incredible work locations across the San Francisco Bay Area, including Alcatraz, Muir Woods, Golden Gate Bridge, Crissy Field and Lands End. The physical requirements of these site visits include walking on uneven surfaces and climbing moderate hills (equivalent of 13 story climb on Alcatraz).

Compensation and Benefits:
The Parks Conservancy provides its employees with a competitive salary that is benchmarked with other non-profit organizations in the Bay Area. The annual starting salary for this position is $145,000 to $150,000 (Pay Grade 27). As part of our equitable hiring practices, the Parks Conservancy will hire at the salary posted for the position and will not make an offer above this level.
