Chief Financial Officer
About the Opportunity
Our client is a well-established specialty contractor that has grown steadily through both organic expansion and acquisition. The CFO will report directly to the CEO and function as a true strategic partner. This leader will own finance and accounting end to end while playing a central role in deal work, capital decisions, margin improvement, and the buildout of a multi-entity operating structure.
This is a role for someone who can think like an owner and still know where the numbers come from. The client is explicit that the right person stays close to the details rather than delegating away the areas where accuracy and compliance actually get decided.
This role is onsite in Phoenix, Arizona. Our client is open to out of market candidates looking to relocate to Arizona, but relocation is currently not being included in compensation package.
What You'll Own
Financial Operations & Infrastructure
- Run the close cycle and produce financial statements that ownership and lending partners can act on with confidence
- Maintain covenant compliance and regulatory reporting across all periods
- Oversee construction accounting — WIP, job costing, and percentage-of-completion — with genuine working knowledge, not oversight from a distance
- Manage a fiscal calendar transition without disruption to reporting continuity
- Build and tighten internal controls, standardize reporting, and raise financial visibility across business units
- Lead and develop the accounting and FP&A team, including AP and AR
Strategic Finance
- Own the annual budget, multi-year forecasting, and long-range planning
- Partner with the CEO and executive team on evaluating and sequencing company initiatives
- Drive margin through procurement strategy, vendor negotiation, rebate capture, and working capital discipline
- Deliver reporting and analysis to ownership and outside advisors that supports real decisions
- Surface value-creation opportunities beyond the P&L — systems, IP, operational leverage
M&A and Capital Strategy
- Lead financial due diligence, valuation modeling, and transaction analysis on acquisition targets
- Partner with the CEO through the full deal lifecycle, including post-close integration
- Stand up the accounting architecture for a holding company structure: entity design, intercompany, consolidations, controls
- Build reporting and governance frameworks that scale across multiple entities
- Advise on capital allocation, cash strategy, and investment decisions
What Success Looks Like
Twelve months in, ownership has financial information they trust without asking twice, the finance team is deeper than it is today, acquisition diligence runs through a repeatable process, and the reporting structure can absorb the next entity without a fire drill.
Background We're Looking For
- Senior finance leadership experience in construction, contracting, or another project-based industry for large organization (200M +)
- Hands-on command of construction accounting fundamentals
- Demonstrated M&A involvement — diligence, modeling, integration, or all three
- Experience building or operating within a multi-entity or holding company structure
- Track record with banking relationships and covenant management
- Comfort operating in a growth environment where infrastructure is still being built
- Someone who can sit in a strategy conversation and a job cost review on the same day
