The Opportunity
Our client is seeking a Chief Financial Officer to lead the financial function of a growing, multi-state design-build general contractor. Reporting to the President and working closely with the executive leadership team, the CFO will own financial strategy, construction accounting, multi-state tax and compliance, banking and bonding relationships, and financial reporting across all three offices. This is a hands-on leadership role for an experienced construction finance executive who is comfortable operating close to the business in a company of a similar size, while building the infrastructure to support continued multi-state growth.
Key Responsibilities
- Own overall financial strategy, budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow / working capital management across all three offices and 35-state project footprint.
- Manage banking relationships, credit facilities, and surety/bonding capacity — a critical lever for a growing general contractor bidding larger and more numerous projects.
- Oversee construction accounting operations, including job costing, percentage-of-completion (WIP) reporting, project profitability analysis, billing/change order management, and subcontractor payment and retainage processes.
- Direct multi-state compliance — business licensing, and state income, sales/use, and payroll tax obligations across 35-state operating footprint — partnering with outside tax advisors as needed.
- Own the finance systems stack, including Procore and Sage Timberline (Sage 300 CRE), and drive tighter integration between project management and accounting data.
- Lead, develop, and scale the accounting and finance team; manage annual audit/review engagements and lender/bonding-covenant compliance.
- Prepare financial reporting and analysis for ownership and the executive team, including support for the annual profit-share bonus calculation.
- Partner with the President and leadership team on strategic planning, pricing/risk decisions, and evaluation of future growth opportunities.
- Provide oversight of the HR and IT functions, ensuring policies, systems, and internal controls scale appropriately with the company's multi-state workforce (nice to have, not required).
What We're Looking For
- Progressive accounting/finance leadership experience with meaningful time as a Controller, VP of Finance, or CFO within construction or general contracting — required.
- Multi-state operating experience, with working knowledge of business licensing requirements and the state tax implications of operating across many jurisdictions — required.
- Hands-on experience with Procore and Sage Timberline (Sage 300 CRE). Candidates strong in one system and open to training on the other will be considered.
- Strong command of construction-specific accounting: job costing, percentage-of-completion (WIP) reporting, and project-level profitability analysis.
- Experience managing banking, lending, and bonding/surety relationships in a contracting environment.
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA a plus.
- Prior oversight of HR and/or IT functions is a plus, but not required.
- A hands-on, collaborative leadership style suited to a close-knit, 55–60 person organization with a growing multi-state footprint.
Compensation & What The Role Offers
- Base salary of $200,000 – $250,000, commensurate with experience.
- Annual bonus of 5–10% tied to company profit share.
- A seat at the leadership table of a specialized, growing design-build general contractor with a strong reputation in the food and beverage sector.
- Direct partnership with the President and executive team in shaping the company's financial strategy and continued multi-state growth.
