Greater Cleveland Habitat for Humanity’s Chief Financial Officer (CFO) provides strategic and hands-on leadership in all areas of finance and financial operations for Greater Cleveland Habitat for Humanity (GCHFH). Reporting directly to the President/CEO, the CFO is responsible for managing the organization’s financial systems, ensuring legal compliance, maintaining fiscal integrity, and contributing to strategic planning and organizational sustainability.
Key Responsibilities
- Develops and implements financial policies, procedures, and internal controls that promote transparency, accuracy, and accountability.
- Leads the annual budgeting process in collaboration with department heads; monitors financial performance against budgets and benchmarks.
- Identifies financial risks and opportunities and recommends strategies for mitigation and sustainability.
- Oversees financial reporting and ensures compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and accounting standards.
- Manages all aspects of cash flow, forecasting, and liquidity planning.
- Oversees and reports on the organization’s internal investments, ensuring responsible stewardship and alignment with organizational goals.
- Sits on the organization’s retirement plan committee, providing financial oversight and guidance for staff retirement programs.
- Oversees the organization’s internal IT function and ensures technology systems meet operational and security standards.
- Administers federal and pass-through funding disbursements to sub-affiliates, ensuring compliance with funder and program requirements.
- Completes financial reporting and draws for federal grants and other restricted funding sources.
- Prepares and presents timely and accurate financial reports, including income statements, balance sheets, and cash flow analyses.
- Maintains financial oversight of construction activity, including job costing and Construction in Progress (CIP) tracking.
- Oversees outsourced payroll processing, payroll taxes, and quarterly returns.
- Directs general ledger activities including accounts payable, accounts receivable, bank reconciliations, and fixed asset management.
- Coordinates all audit functions with external auditors and ensures timely completion of the annual financial audit and all associated IRS filings (Form 990/990T).
- Provides oversight of the Single Audit process when applicable to ensure full federal compliance.
- Ensures accurate and timely financial documentation for grants, in collaboration with the development team, and monitors compliance with funder requirements.
- Serves as the staff liaison to the Finance Committee of the Board of Directors and works closely with the Board Treasurer.
- Maintains relationships with banking institutions, auditors, and other financial partners.
- Advises senior leadership on long-term financial planning, investment strategies, and risk management.
- Implements technologies and systems to enhance financial operations and reporting accuracy.
- Hires, trains, coaches, and supervises the activities of direct reports. Evaluates staff performance. Holds direct report accountable for meeting objectives by ensuring that performance aligns with expectations.
- Performs other duties of a similar nature as may be required.
Qualifications
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
- Minimum of seven (7) years in a senior financial leadership role, preferably in a nonprofit environment.
- Minimum of three (3) years of strong management and/or team leadership experience.
- Demonstrated experience in managing accounting operations, audits, budgets, and compliance.
- Strong understanding of GAAP and nonprofit financial standards.
- Proficiency in accounting software and financial reporting systems (e.g., QuickBooks, Sage Intacct).
- Ability to translate complex financial concepts to non-financial stakeholders.
- Proven leadership skills with the ability to collaborate across departments.
- Excellent analytical, strategic thinking, and organizational skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Possesses the ability to build and maintain professional relationships
- Experience working directly with people from diverse, racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

Preferred
- Master’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA)
- Ten years of demonstrated experience in a senior leadership role
- Familiarity with OMB Uniform Guidance and federal grant administration
Position Details
- Reports to: President/CEO
- Full-time, exempt
- Workweek: Monday through Friday; some evening and weekend work will be required.
- Targeted salary: $115,000 - $137,500; commensurate with experience

Work Environment & Physical Requirements: This position primarily operates in a professional office environment with standard office equipment. Some travel for meetings or conferences. However, the role also requires occasional work in outdoor environments, particularly during home visits. Candidates must be comfortable occasionally navigating active construction sites and community event settings, sometimes in varying weather conditions. Occasional standing and walking required.
