About the Company
Our client is an established, privately held concrete and construction contractor based in Florida, self-performing concrete work and delivering construction projects across the state. With a strong reputation for quality and a growing backlog, the company is adding a Chief Financial Officer to strengthen its financial leadership and support its next stage of growth. The client’s identity will be shared with shortlisted candidates.
Position Overview
The CFO will lead all financial, accounting and risk functions and serve as a strategic partner to ownership and operations. This is a hands-on executive role for a finance leader who understands how construction companies make and lose money: job costing, WIP, cash flow, bonding and project-level financial controls.
Key Responsibilities
- Partner with ownership on strategy, growth planning, capital allocation and long-term financial goals.
- Lead, develop and expand the accounting and finance team (controller, AP/AR, payroll, project accounting).
- Present clear financial results, forecasts and recommendations to ownership.
- Oversee monthly, quarterly and annual close and GAAP financial statements.
- Own percentage-of-completion revenue recognition (ASC 606), WIP schedules and over/under-billing analysis.
- Maintain strong internal controls, policies and procedures; manage the annual audit or review with outside CPAs.
- Run accurate job costing and partner with operations on estimates, bid margins, budgets and cost-to-complete forecasts.
- Oversee pay applications, change orders, retainage, lien waivers and collections to protect cash flow.
- Provide project-level profitability reporting and early warning on fade or overruns.
- Manage cash flow forecasting, treasury, lines of credit and banking relationships.
- Own surety and bonding relationships, including bonding capacity planning and WIP presentations.
- Oversee insurance and risk programs (GL, workers’ compensation, auto, builder’s risk, OCIP/CCIP participation) and contract risk review.
- Coordinate tax planning and compliance with outside advisors, including Florida sales and use tax.
- Oversee payroll compliance, including certified/prevailing wage where required.
- Lead equipment fleet capital planning (lease vs. buy, financing, depreciation).
- Optimize the construction ERP and reporting tools (e.g., Viewpoint, Sage, Foundation, Procore) for real-time job and company visibility.
Qualifications
- Candidates must have progressive finance leadership experience within construction, ideally with a concrete, general, specialty or heavy civil contractor.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required; CPA strongly preferred; MBA a plus.
- 10+ years of progressive accounting and finance experience, with 5+ years as CFO, VP of Finance or Controller at a construction company.
- Deep knowledge of construction accounting: job costing, WIP, percentage-of-completion, retainage, change orders and pay applications.
- Proven experience managing surety/bonding, banking and insurance relationships for a contractor.
- Hands-on experience with a construction ERP (Viewpoint Vista/Spectrum, Sage 300 CRE/Intacct, Foundation or similar).
- Experience with privately held or owner-led companies; comfortable being both strategic and hands-on.
- Florida construction market knowledge preferred.
- Strong leadership, communication and analytical skills, with high integrity and discretion.
