Job Title: Chief Financial Officer
Reports to: President and Chief Executive Officer
Classification: Full-time, exempt
Job Location: Hybrid: In office 2+ days per week (North Riverside, Illinois)
Summary of Primary Functions
The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) reports to the President & CEO and has primary responsibility to oversee and direct financial, accounting, and investment activities in support of the organization’s strategy. The CFO ensures sound financial management and investment practices that support organizational growth, financial stability, and programmatic goals. The CFO ensures organizational compliance with relevant laws and manages organizational risks and liabilities. The CFO partners with the Director of Development and Communications to identify, establish, and maintain funds, and to provide other products and services that meet donors’ philanthropic goals. The CFO partners with the Director of Operations to ensure proper recording and auditing of programmatic strategies that advance the organization’s strategic goals. The CFO engages in professional growth opportunities offered by the organization.
Job Duties
- Develops and implements long-range financial plans in conjunction with the President & CEO and the Finance Committee, including setting targets for organizational growth
- Oversees organizational budgeting and reporting, working with the Staff Accountant to prepare annual budgets and routine expenditure reports according to GAAP principles
- Builds strong relationships with Area Agencies on Aging, and monitors, reports, and maintains compliance with grants
- Prepares accurate information for funding agencies, foundations, and donors as part of grant applications and financial reports
- Directs the Accounting and Accounts Payable functions, and guides the Gift Processing function to ensure best practice and compliance with all applicable legal and regulatory standards
- Maintains and enhances internal financial management policies and procedures, performance measures, and dashboards
- Ensures compliance with a system of strong internal controls
- Develops a strong working relationship with the Board of Directors
- Develops, present, and secure Board approval for strategic financial initiatives
- Prepares monthly and quarterly financial statements and financial analysis
- Oversees annual audit process (Single Audit for non-federal entities that spend $750,000 or more in federal funds in a fiscal year)
- Supports the Audit Committee to ensure compliance with all applicable financial, accounting, legal, and regulatory requirements and best-practice standards
- Supports the Investment Committee to ensure compliance with Board–approved investment policies
- Serves as primary contact on behalf of the organization for banking relationships, investment managers, and auditors
- Handles risk-management for the organization, working with insurance agents to ensure proper liability coverage (D&O, cybersecurity, key person, etc.)
- Supervises and develops members of the finance team
- Coordinates with human resources function, including overseeing the employee benefits program
- Other duties as assigned
Skills Required
- Expertise in financial and accounting policies, practices, and systems
- Demonstrated track record in meeting compliance and best practices for finance, investment, and accounting
- Ability to assess business implications of operations
- Ability to build support for approaches at the Board level and externally
- Ability to assess and propose strategies for managing organizational risk
- Familiarity with—or willingness to learn about—various charitable-giving vehicles and approaches
- Commitment to embed organizational values across financial, investment, and administrative functions
Education and Experience Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in business or a related field required
- CPA and/or master’s degree preferred
- Minimum of 8 years of directly relevant work experience in finance, investment, and/or nonprofit accounting and finance
- Experience in designing and executing strategies to meet business opportunities and challenges
- Thorough understanding of compliance with Federal Uniform Guidance
- Experience at a Controller, Director, or Chief Financial Officer level
- Proficiency with QuickBooks Online
Salary range: $130,000-$150,000
