Reporting to the President, the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) plays a critical role in shaping Primary’s financial strategy, overseeing financial operations, and driving long-term financial health. This may include efforts towards, but not limited to:
- Financial Strategy & Leadership
- Develop and execute the company’s financial strategy to support growth, profitability, and long-term sustainability.
- Provide strategic leadership in the areas of financial planning, budgeting, forecasting, and capital management.
- Financial Reporting & Analysis
- Oversee the preparation and presentation of accurate and timely financial reports and analysis to the CEO, board of directors, and key stakeholders.
- Ensure the company’s financial performance is aligned with business objectives and provide insights on risks, opportunities, and areas for improvement.
- Cash Flow & Capital Management
- Manage cash flow, working capital, and liquidity to ensure the firm has adequate resources to meet operational and investment needs.
- Lead efforts to secure financing, optimize the capital structure, and manage relationships with financial institutions and investors.
- Budgeting & Forecasting
- Lead the annual budgeting process and monitor, project, and analyze performance against budgeted targets.
- Provide ongoing financial forecasting and analysis to support decision-making at all levels of the organization.
- Cost Management & Profitability
- Work with senior leadership to monitor revenue and costs, identify areas for operational efficiency, and enhance profitability.
- Develop cost control measures and process improvements to maximize the firm’s financial performance.
- Risk Management
- Identify, evaluate, and mitigate financial risks.
- Oversee insurance, compliance, and other financial risk management functions to protect the firm’s assets and ensure compliance with governing body, stakeholder, and industry regulations and laws.
- Strategic Planning & M&A Support
- Collaborate with the Board of Directors, President, Chief Strategy Officer and Executive team on corporate strategy, including mergers and acquisitions, capital investments, and strategic partnerships.
- Provide financial insights and recommendations for growth opportunities.
- Tax Planning & Compliance
- Oversee tax strategy and compliance to ensure the firm’s tax position is optimized.
- Manage relationships with external auditors, tax advisors, and regulators to ensure compliance with relevant tax laws and regulations.
- Systems & Process Improvement
- Drive the adoption of financial technologies, systems, and best practices to streamline financial operations, improve reporting accuracy, and support scalability as the business grows.
- Business Unit Support
- Provide guidance and support to Primary’s business units to ensure local teams have the knowledge and tools to manage departmental financials.
- Support business units to ensure departmental compliance to company established standards.
- International Accounting and Compliance
- Develop and implement international financial strategies to align with corporate goals.
- Oversee budgeting, forecasting, and financial modeling for multinational operations.
- Manage cross-border financial transactions, investments, and capital allocation.
- Oversee compliance with country-specific tax regulations, corporate governance laws, and reporting requirements.
- Team Leadership & Development
- Invest in the mentoring and development of the finance team members. Ensure they understand their roles and responsibilities and are equipped to succeed in carrying them out.
- Bring about the optimized and scalable use of resources within the finance team, with strong consideration to long term growth patterns
- Establish and maintain the overall succession plan for the finance division.
- Foster a culture of excellence, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
The successful candidate will ideally be based in Calgary, however we are open to candidates that reside in our other primary locations.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree (essential) in finance, accounting, economics, or business administration
- Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation
- Minimum 15 years of progressive experience in finance, account and corporate leadership roles. Prior roles in senior financial positions (e.g., Controller, VP of Finance, Finance Director)
- Knowledge of tax laws and CRA regulations
- Strong working knowledge of ASPE and IFRS reporting standards
- Strong ability to manage teams and communicate with executives, board members, and shareholders
- Proficiency in financial software, ERP systems, and data analysis tools.
A few qualifications that would help you succeed:
- Experience leading the financial component of mergers & acquisitions
- Experience facilitating international accounting and overseeing intercompany transactions
- Proven track record of driving financial growth and improving operational efficiency
