The Role
Backbone CFO is seeking a CFO Director who will serve as a key member of our executive leadership team. This is not just a role about leading CFOs—it is about shaping the future of our firm. You will have a seat at the table to influence our growth strategy, refine our delivery model, optimize scope and pricing, and elevate the level of strategic insight we deliver to our clients.
Our clients—leaders in construction, restoration, and manufacturing—turn to us for guidance through their most pivotal moments: managing complex cash flows, implementing WIP accounting, improving profitability, navigating acquisitions, securing financing, and preparing for exit. This role requires someone who not only understands these challenges but has personally led organizations through them.
Major Responsibilities
Executive Leadership and Strategy
- Actively contribute as a member of the Backbone CFO executive leadership team, shaping company strategy, delivery model, service scope, and pricing.
- Provide market intelligence and industry insight that influence growth direction, client selection, and service innovation.
Client Oversight & Relationship Management
- Work through your Fractional CFO team with a total portfolio of up to 30+ client relationships at a strategic level, ensuring each receives best-in-class financial leadership tailored to their industry’s challenges.
- Engage directly in high impact client initiatives, examples include M&A, ERP implementation, and strategic financing projects.
- Attend quarterly client meetings to assess satisfaction, strengthen alignment, and identify opportunities.
CFO Team Leadership and Success
- Empower and develop the CFO team through hands-on coaching, structured feedback, and clear expectations to deliver high client satisfaction and value that drives retention.
- Lead weekly 1:1 conversations that focus on client outcomes and individual growth—removing roadblocks, developing capability, and reinforcing alignment.
- Facilitate monthly performance coaching for each CFO to promote executive presence for clients, professional development and best practices.
- Achieve 90% client retention and maintain an average client strategy rating of 8.5 or better across the team’s portfolio
Operational Leadership
- Lead weekly Client Service L-10 meetings to drive alignment, issue-solving, and priority execution.
- Oversee workflow efficiency, capacity planning, and team performance to ensure operational scalability and financial performance of the CFO portfolio.
- Own and continuously improve SOPs, model templates, and reporting tools to standardize excellence.
Business Development & Network Building
- Proactively build and nurture a professional network of resources—accountants, legal advisors, investors, and other specialists—to enhance client value and partner with sales to close strategic opportunities.
- Collaborate with other internal stakeholders to identify opportunities for expanding service offerings or improving internal processes.
- Represent Backbone CFO in the marketplace as a thought leader in construction, restoration, and manufacturing financial strategy.
About You
Our ideal fit for this role will be someone who PERSONALLY has:
- A minimum of 10+ years as CFO in construction, manufacturing or industrial markets with experience presenting to boards and ownership groups, influencing strategic direction, and navigating high-stakes decisions.
- Executive-level experience in challenging business environments marked by aggressive growth, rigorous compliance, overcoming challenges in cash flow management, financial projections, acquisitions, ERP implementations, and pricing optimization.
- Thrives in entrepreneurial environments, ambiguity, adapts quickly and brings clarity to chaos.
- Industry experience with a deep understanding of WIP accounting, gross margin improvement, and operational drivers in project-based businesses.
- Energized by coaching others. Believe the best leaders challenge and uplift others. Adept at coaching executives, developing high-performing teams, and leading through change.
- Understands people-first but performance-driven. You are energized by helping your team succeed and hold them to high standards through encouragement, clarity, and accountability.

Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $225,000.00 - $250,000.00 per year
