Chief Financial Officer | Brooklyn, NY | Onsite | Compensation: $150,000-$160,000
About the role
A well-established Brooklyn-based nonprofit and community health organization is seeking a Chief Financial Officer to serve as a key member of the senior leadership team, reporting directly to the CEO and Board of Directors. This is a hands-on, high-visibility role responsible for all aspects of finance; including financial planning, revenue cycle management, grant compliance, audit oversight, and long-term financial strategy for an organization delivering critical health and social services across Brooklyn.
What you'll actually do
- Oversee all accounting functions including general ledger, AP, AR, payroll, bank reconciliations, and month-end and year-end close
- Manage cash flow, investments, and asset management; oversee banking relationships and financing strategies
- Facilitate annual audits, tax filings, and serve as primary liaison to external auditors
- Oversee Medicaid, Medicare, and private insurance billing, claims processing, coding accuracy, and denial management
- Implement KPIs and reporting tools to optimize collections, minimize denials, and maintain financial health
- Lead the annual budgeting and forecasting process in collaboration with program directors and senior leadership
- Monitor budget vs. actual performance, analyze variances, and provide actionable insights
- Prepare and file the NYS Consolidated Fiscal Report (CFR) and all required federal and state funder reporting
- Serve as primary financial liaison to the Board of Directors, Internal Affairs, and Audit and Risk Committees
- Ensure compliance with HIPAA, HRSA, OMH, OASAS, and all applicable nonprofit and healthcare regulations
- Oversee operational functions including purchasing, facilities, and administrative processes
- Collaborate with HR on staffing, benefits, and financial policy alignment
What we're looking for
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required; MBA and/or CPA strongly preferred
- 10+ years of financial management leadership experience within a complex nonprofit and/or healthcare organization
- Strong knowledge of behavioral health billing and healthcare revenue cycle management
- Experience filing the NYS Consolidated Fiscal Report (CFR)
- Familiarity with city, state, and federal grants including Medicaid/Medicare, DOHMH, OMH, and OASAS requirements
- Experience with private foundation grants a plus
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint; FundEz experience a plus
- Diplomatic, high-integrity, hands-on leader with strong written, verbal, and Board-level communication skills
