About the Role
The Chief Financial Officer leads the financial management functions of Tl’azt’en Nation, providing professional oversight to the Finance Department and serving as a trusted advisor to the Associate Executive Director and Chief & Council. This role ensures that the Nation’s financial affairs are managed with integrity, transparency, and an enduring commitment to community well-being.

Key Responsibilities
The Chief Financial Officer provides trusted financial leadership and strategic oversight that ensures transparency, accountability, and long-term prosperity for Tl’azt’en Nation. By guiding budgets, audits, and investments with integrity, the CFO strengthens Council’s decision-making, safeguards community resources, and upholds the Nation’s Financial Administration Law—anchoring all financial operations in sound governance and Dakelh values.
- Provide financial advice and support to Chief & Council, the Associate Executive Director, the Executive Director, and managers.
- Analyse financial performance and develop reporting frameworks to inform strategic decision-making by Council, Executive and departmental leadership.
- Lead the annual budgeting and forecasting process in coordination with managers and senior leadership.
- Oversee the annual external audit process and ensure compliance with audit requirements.
- Monitor expenditures and financial activity in accordance with the Nation’s Financial Administration Law and policies.
- Provide monthly financial updates to managers, quarterly presentations to Chief & Council and executive leadership.
- Implement the Nation’s Financial Administration Law and develop associated policies and directives.
- Oversee cash management functions, including electronic banking, investments (short- and long-term), capital project funding/cash flows and reporting.
- Direct preparation of monthly financial statements, variance reports, general ledger oversight, journal entries and reconciliations in coordination with the Finance Department.
- Serve as advisor to the Finance & Operations Committee; undertake special financial investigations and projects as directed by Chief & Council or the Associate Executive Director.
- Develop, implement and interpret financial policies, procedures, metrics and reporting frameworks that support strategic priorities.
- Maintain confidentiality on all matters relating to the affairs of the Nation; build and maintain effective relationships with external partners, governments, vendors and other Indigenous organisations.
- Other related duties as required.
What You Bring
The ideal candidate is a strategic financial leader with professional accounting credentials, deep knowledge of public-sector and Indigenous financial frameworks, and proven experience managing complex budgets, audits, and funding agreements.
- Professional accounting designation (CGA, CA or CMA) and a minimum of three years of relevant experience— or equivalent education, training and experience.
- Expert knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) relevant to First Nation/government contexts; knowledge of Canadian Public Sector Accounting Standards is an asset.
- Demonstrated experience with federal government funding programs, contract/grant compliance, alternate sources of funding, and financial obligations under Indigenous funding agreements.
- Advanced Excel and accounting software skills (e.g., AccPac or equivalent);
- Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to present complex financial information clearly to diverse audiences.
- Strong analytical, project-management, organisational and budgeting skills; ability to lead and manage multiple financial projects and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Valid BC Driver’s Licence; successful Criminal Records Check.

Location
This position is based at the Tl’azt’en Nation Administration Office in Tache, BC, with some travel to surrounding communities as needed.
