About the Role
Our client is a reputable commercial design-build construction firm headquartered in Columbus, Ohio. With a long-standing presence in the market and a strong pipeline of work across industrial and commercial sectors, the company is seeking a strategic and experienced Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to join its executive leadership team.
This individual will lead all financial and accounting functions, partner closely with ownership, and play a key role in guiding the organization’s long-term financial health, growth strategy, and operational performance.
Key Responsibilities:
Financial Leadership
- Lead and mentor a small Finance & Accounting team, fostering collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement.
- Influence internal stakeholders across the organization and serve as a trusted business advisor to the leadership team.
Financial Strategy & Planning
- Develop annual budgets, forecasts, capital plans, and long-term financial strategies aligned with company goals.
- Identify variances to plan and partner with leadership to implement corrective actions.
- Provide actionable financial analysis and insights to support decision-making at all levels of the business.
Project Finance (Commercial Construction)
- Review bids and proposals to ensure financial viability and accuracy.
- Oversee project profitability, job cost controls, cost-to-complete forecasting, and revenue recognition.
- Optimize cash flow across project lifecycles and maintain a strong understanding of project-specific financial drivers.
- Track job performance and partner with Operations and Project Managers to improve margins and resource allocation.
Retail Finance
- Review and interpret tenant leases and CAM obligations.
- Analyze tenant-level and center-wide profitability for owned or managed retail assets.
- Support compliance with partnership agreements, working closely with internal and external partners.
- Provide financial insights to guide asset management decisions.
Risk Management
- Identify, assess, and mitigate financial risks across the organization.
- Oversee insurance programs, surety bonding, and contract compliance.
- Manage relationships with external CPA firms for both audit and tax-related matters.
- Work with brokers to evaluate benefit packages and ensure reporting compliance.
Financial Reporting & Compliance
- Ensure accurate, timely, and transparent financial reporting that meets regulatory and internal standards.
- Maintain compliance with GAAP, tax requirements, audits, and other regulatory obligations.
Cash Flow Management
- Develop and maintain cash flow forecasting models to ensure healthy liquidity.
- Manage company cash positions, banking relationships, and funding strategies.
Investment & Growth
- Evaluate capital structure and manage financing arrangements.
- Support strategic growth initiatives through financial modeling, scenario analysis, and risk evaluation.
Operations Partnership
- Collaborate cross-functionally to drive efficiency, improve processes, and enhance financial understanding across the business.
- Communicate financial concepts in a clear and actionable way to non-financial stakeholders.
Business Intelligence
- Analyze industry trends, company performance, and market conditions to identify opportunities for improvement.
- Research new metrics, tools, and analytical approaches to strengthen financial performance.
QualificationsRequired
- 10+ years of progressive financial leadership experience, including work as a CFO, VP of Finance, or Controller within commercial construction.
- Strong experience in project-based financial management, including WIP, job costing, forecasting, and revenue recognition.
- Proven ability to lead financial planning and analysis, budgeting, and long-term strategy.
- Experience with insurance, surety bonding, and risk mitigation.
- Demonstrated ability to partner effectively with operations and senior leadership.
- Strong communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
Preferred
- Experience working in a design-build construction environment.
- Exposure to retail financial structures (tenant leases, CAM, center profitability).
- CPA, MBA, or similar advanced credential.
- Experience improving processes or implementing new financial tools/analytics.
Compensation

Pay: $150,000.00 - $250,000.00 per year
