Position Summary
The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is a key member of the senior leadership team, providing strategic direction and operational oversight of all financial aspects of Quest Society and Atlantic Community Shelters Society.
The CFO will ensure sound financial stewardship, transparency, and sustainability across our expanding portfolio of shelter, community support and housing programs. This role combines high-level strategic leadership with hands-on financial management, supporting two closely aligned organizations working collaboratively to serve the community.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic and Financial Leadership
- Partner with the CEO, Board of Directors, and leadership teams to develop and implement financial strategies that align with each organization’s mission and goals.
- Provide strategic financial analysis, forecasts, and recommendations to support effective decision-making and resource allocation.
- Contribute to long-term sustainability and growth planning for both organizations.
Financial Management and Reporting
- Oversee all accounting, budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting functions for both societies.
- Ensure compliance with accounting standards, funding agreements, and relevant regulations.
- Prepare timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and performance reports.
- Lead the annual audit process and liaise with external auditors.
Budgeting and Funding
- Direct the annual budget process and ensure budgets align with operational and strategic priorities.
- Monitor and report on budget performance, funding utilization, and financial risks.
- Support grant proposals, government contracts, and donor reporting through sound financial planning and documentation.
- Manage diverse funding streams, including municipal, provincial, and federal grants, as well as philanthropic contributions.
Risk, Compliance, and Systems
- Maintain and strengthen internal controls, financial policies, and risk management frameworks.
- Ensure compliance with all statutory, contractual, and funder requirements.
- Oversee financial systems and technology, promoting accuracy, efficiency, and data integrity.
- Support financial planning for capital projects, real estate assets, and infrastructure investments.
Leadership and Collaboration
- Lead, mentor, and develop the finance team to foster excellence, accountability, and continuous improvement.
- Build organizational capacity in financial literacy and stewardship across departments.
- Collaborate with operational leaders to align financial management with program delivery and community impact.
Qualifications
- CPA designation required.
- MBA or equivalent advanced degree preferred.
- Minimum of 10 years of progressive financial management experience, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership role, ideally in a large non-profit, public sector, or social services organization.
- Strong knowledge of Accounting Standards for Not-for-Profits (ASNPO), government funding compliance, and audit processes.
- Proven experience managing complex, multi-entity budgets and reporting for multiple funding sources.
- Proficiency with financial management software.
