Chief Financial Officer
Location: Washington, DC – Hybrid (4 days/week in office)
Salary Range: $200,000 – $240,000 annually (commensurate with experience)

Position Summary:
The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is responsible for leading The Louis D. Brandeis Center for Human Rights Under Law’s financial strategy, stewardship, and sustainability. As a key member of the executive leadership team, the CFO oversees all financial functions, including budgeting, forecasting, accounting, financial reporting, compliance, risk management, and investment oversight.
The CFO partners closely with the CEO, Board of Directors, and senior leadership to ensure the organization’s financial health, transparency, and long-term growth. This role requires a strategic and analytical leader who can translate complex financial data into actionable insights, strengthen internal controls, and align financial planning with the Center’s mission and strategic priorities.
This position is ideal for a principled, detail-oriented executive with deep nonprofit financial expertise who thrives in a mission-driven, high-impact environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Financial Strategy & Executive Leadership
- Serve as a key member of the executive leadership team, contributing to organizational strategy and long-term planning.
- Develop and execute a multi-year financial strategy aligned with the Center’s mission and growth objectives.
- Advise the CEO and Board on financial planning, risk assessment, and resource allocation.
- Provide financial modeling and scenario planning to support strategic initiatives and expansion.
Financial Management & Oversight
- Oversee all accounting, financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow management.
- Ensure timely and accurate preparation of financial statements in accordance with nonprofit accounting standards (GAAP).
- Lead the annual budgeting process and ongoing financial performance analysis.
- Establish and maintain strong internal controls, financial policies, and procedures.
- Monitor liquidity, reserves, and investment strategies to ensure long-term sustainability.
Compliance, Risk & Governance
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations applicable to nonprofit organizations.
- Oversee annual audits and manage relationships with external auditors, tax advisors, and financial institutions.
- Support the CEO in preparing financial reports and materials for the Board of Directors and relevant committees.
- Manage enterprise risk, insurance coverage, and financial compliance processes.
Development & Grant Financial Oversight
- Partner with the development team to support grant budgeting, reporting, and compliance.
- Oversee financial reporting to foundations, government agencies, and other funders.
- Ensure appropriate tracking and allocation of restricted and unrestricted funds.
Financial Infrastructure & Systems
- Evaluate and strengthen financial systems, tools, and reporting capabilities to support organizational growth.
- Oversee finance staff and external accounting partners, ensuring strong team performance and accountability.
- Improve processes to enhance transparency, efficiency, and scalability.
Qualifications:
Required
- 12+ years of senior financial leadership experience, preferably in a nonprofit, legal, advocacy, or mission-driven organization.
- Demonstrated experience overseeing accounting, budgeting, audits, and financial compliance.
- Strong knowledge of nonprofit accounting standards (GAAP) and regulatory requirements.
- Proven experience working closely with executive leadership and a board of directors.
- Exceptional analytical, organizational, and strategic thinking skills.
- High level of integrity, discretion, and sound judgment.
Preferred
- CPA or advanced degree in finance, accounting, or business.
- Experience managing financial operations in a growing organization.
- Familiarity with grant-funded environments and complex funding structures.
