Chief Financial Officer (CFO)
Location: Remote – On-site a few times per month in the DMV area
Overview:
The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is a strategic business leader responsible for the financial direction of a high-growth, highly profitable US subsidiary operating in a technology-focused fintech environment. This $100M revenue business generates exceptional margins and operates with fierce independence from its parent company. This role requires a seasoned CFO with 6-7+ years of CFO-level experience who thrives in startup environments, possesses deep global/international operational expertise, and has the strategic acumen to protect subsidiary interests.
Key Responsibilities:
Compliance & Reporting (US & International):
- Oversee all financial reporting in compliance with US Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and relevant US regulations, maintaining the highly audited and buttoned-up processes already in place.
- Ensure compliance with all aspects of international regulations as they pertain to the subsidiary's operations, including coordination with the parent company on India-based operations and reporting obligations.
- Maintain strong internal control systems and coordinate with external auditors to verify compliance and financial transparency.
International Expansion & Entity Structuring:
- Lead financial strategy and execution for market entry into Europe and Latin America, including entity structuring, local tax compliance (e.g., VAT), and billing infrastructure setup.
- Coordinate with parent company to establish international entities while maintaining subsidiary independence and operational control.
- Implement sophisticated currency management strategies and cross-border cash flow optimization.
Strategic Planning & Risk Management:
- Serve as a strategic partner to the CEO and the independent US Board of Directors, identifying investment opportunities, assessing financial risks, and supporting parent company M&A activities as needed.
- Provide financial leadership for a business that generates 10% of parent company EBITDA and 40% of its post-tax profit, ensuring continued strong margins and growth trajectory.
- Navigate the agile, fast-paced nature of a technology-focused fintech business with comfort in ambiguity and rapid change.
Leadership & Operations:
- Lead a lean, high-performing finance team of 8 professionals (mix of US, Italy, and Dominican Republic-based staff) plus support personnel, fostering a culture of accountability and excellence in a startup environment.
- Mentor and develop the current Director of Finance, a highly competent individual who will report to this role and continue growing within the organization.
- Leverage the fully integrated NetSuite ERP system and drive continuous improvement in financial systems, data analytics, and business intelligence capabilities.
- Oversee recurring revenue and cost models inherent to the business structure, optimizing for predictability and margins.
Qualifications & Skills:
Education: A bachelor's degree in Finance or Accounting is required. An MBA or professional certification such as CPA or CFA is strongly preferred.
Experience:
- 5+ years as a Chief Financial Officer, with demonstrated success leading the finance function in high-growth, dynamic environments.
- Proven experience in a startup or startup-like environment where agility, resourcefulness, and entrepreneurial thinking are essential.
- Direct, hands-on global/international operational experience, including establishing entities, managing multi-country operations, and navigating cross-border regulatory requirements.
- Participation in 1-2 M&A transactions or significant international expansions, with exposure to foreign exchange management, cross-border structuring, and integration (but not M&A-specialist focused).
- Experience managing finances for a US subsidiary of an international company, with specific knowledge of maintaining legal and financial separation and protecting subsidiary interests from parent company influence.
- Background in technology-focused businesses, fintech, or securities industries strongly preferred.
- Track record of walking into well-run finance operations and elevating them to the next level, rather than pure turnaround experience.
Skills:
- Deep expertise in US GAAP, international financial reporting standards, and navigating complex regulatory environments across multiple jurisdictions.
- Strategic mindset with the ability to balance fierce independence with necessary parent company coordination, protecting the subsidiary's interests while maintaining compliance.
- Exceptional communication skills with the ability to work with external advisors (Big 4 accounting firms) to structure data sharing protocols and limit parent company information flow.
- Comfort operating in fast-paced, agile environments with frequent change and ambiguity.
- Strong leadership and team development capabilities, with experience mentoring high-potential finance professionals.
- Ability to maintain corporate formalities and governance required to protect the subsidiary's liability shield and independent positioning.
First-Year Success Metrics:
