Job Summary:
The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is a strategic, hands-on leader responsible for the overall financial health, integrity, and sustainability of the organization. Reporting directly to the CEO and serving as a key member of the Leadership Team, the CFO oversees all financial operations, including accounting, budgeting, financial reporting, cash management, compliance, and audit functions.
The CFO also serves as the primary liaison to the Finance Committee and Board of Directors, supporting financial governance and decision-making.
Key Responsibilities:
Financial Strategy, Reporting & Analysis
- Direct and oversee all financial activities in compliance with GAAP.
- Develop, manage, and monitor the annual organizational budget.
- Prepare and present monthly, annual, and ad hoc financial statements and reports.
- Provide financial analysis and insights to the CEO, Leadership Team, and Board.
- Identify financial risks and opportunities and develop strategies to support organizational sustainability and growth.
- Present operational and financial metrics internally and externally.
Cash Management & Financial Operations
- Manage cash flow, asset management, and financing strategies.
- Oversee and reconcile all bank, investment, and client trust accounts.
- Maintain accurate balance sheet reconciliations and execute month-end and year-end close processes.
- Monitor and properly record all organizational assets.
- Manage client bank accounts as applicable.
Compliance, Audit & Risk Management
- Ensure full compliance with all federal, state, and nonprofit (501(c)(3)) regulations.
- Maintain strong internal controls and financial procedures.
- Manage annual audits, including preparation of documentation and coordination with auditors.
- Oversee preparation and filing of tax returns and required regulatory reports.
- Manage grant compliance and reporting requirements.
- Complete required reporting such as the Colorado Department of Education (CDE) Facility Schools Tuition Cost report.
- Oversee and manage organizational insurance renewals.
Systems, Process Improvement & Technology
- Lead optimization and continuous improvement of accounting workflows and systems.
- Utilize accounting software (e.g., Oracle NetSuite, QuickBooks) to improve efficiency and accuracy.
- Implement automation and best practices in financial operations.
Leadership & Team Management
- Supervise, mentor, and develop accounting staff.
- Oversee Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, payroll, billing, and vendor contracts.
- Support hiring, training, performance management, and delegation of duties.
- Collaborate with Human Resources on payroll systems (e.g., Paycom), employee benefits, and financial aspects of HR operations.
· Build organizational capacity by developing financial acumen across departments.
Board & Stakeholder Engagement
- Serve as staff liaison to the Finance Committee and Board of Directors.
- Support investment strategy discussions and implementation in coordination with advisors.
- Communicate complex financial information clearly to non-financial stakeholders.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Minimum of 5–7 years of progressive accounting/finance experience, including leadership responsibility.
- Experience within nonprofit organizations required.
- Demonstrated experience managing budgets of at least $10M preferred (minimum $4M required).
- Expertise in accounting systems (Oracle NetSuite strongly preferred; QuickBooks acceptable).
- Experience with payroll systems (e.g., Paycom) preferred.
- Experience with governmental billing and grant management.

· Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
· Occasional evening and weekend work may be required for events or meetings.
· Some travel may be necessary to the Colorado Springs locations.
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.
- MBA or advanced degree preferred.
- CPA strongly preferred.
Physical and Mental Demands:
· Ability to work well in an office environment with moderate noise levels from standard office equipment; occasional lifting of up to 20 lbs.; regular walking, sitting, bending, twisting, and reaching; ability to perform consistent work on a computer required. Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
· Interacts with coworkers frequently and occasionally with persons served.
· Must have 5 years of Valid Driving experience and a valid Colorado Driver’s License or be willing to obtain Valid Colorado Driver’s License within 30 days of hire.
