Our client, a progressive and growth-oriented home builder and land development company based in Calgary, is seeking a highly strategic and commercially driven Chief Financial Officer to join their executive leadership team. This is not a traditional back-office finance role, this is a hands-on, deal-oriented leadership position for a finance executive who thrives on structuring opportunities, building relationships, and driving growth through creative capital solutions.
The CFO will play a critical role in shaping the financial future of the organization, with direct responsibility for securing, structuring, and optimizing capital across land development and construction projects. This individual will work closely with senior leadership to enable growth, unlock new opportunities, and ensure financial strength and flexibility in a competitive market.
This is an ideal role for a finance leader who is as comfortable in a boardroom with lenders and investors as they are digging into financial models, cash flow scenarios, and deal structures.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead all aspects of corporate finance, capital strategy, and financial structuring across land development and homebuilding operations
- Build and maintain strong relationships with banks, credit unions, private lenders, equity partners, and institutional investors
- Negotiate and structure debt and equity financing arrangements to support ongoing and future development projects
- Design and implement creative financing solutions to support growth, land acquisition, and project execution
- Oversee cash flow planning, forecasting, and liquidity management across multiple active projects
- Develop financial models, scenario analyses, and investment returns to support strategic decision-making and deal evaluation
- Partner closely with the executive team to evaluate new land acquisitions, development opportunities, and strategic investments
- Lead capital management strategy, ensuring optimal leverage, risk balance, and return on investment
- Provide financial oversight for large-scale construction and land development projects, including budgeting, costing, and margin analysis
- Drive disciplined financial governance while maintaining agility in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment
- Support negotiations on joint ventures, partnerships, and investor structures
- Oversee the finance and accounting function, ensuring strong controls, reporting accuracy, and compliance
Qualifications & Experience
- 10+ years of progressive senior finance leadership experience, ideally within real estate development, homebuilding, construction, or related capital-intensive industries
- Proven track record in raising capital, structuring deals, and managing banking/investor relationships
- Strong negotiation skills with demonstrated ability to close complex financial arrangements
- Deep understanding of project finance, land development economics, and construction cost structures
- Experience with cash flow modelling, financial forecasting, and investment analysis
- Comfortable operating in an entrepreneurial, fast-paced, and growth-focused environment
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to influence at the executive and board level
- CPA designation considered an asset, but not essential if experience is highly relevant
- Strategic thinker with a hands-on, solutions-oriented approach
The Ideal Fit
This role is best suited for a finance leader who is:
-
A natural dealmaker and relationship builder
- Highly commercial and opportunity-driven
- Comfortable navigating ambiguity and creating structure where none exists
- Motivated by growth, impact, and building something meaningful
Why This Role
This is a rare opportunity to step into a true growth-oriented CFO role where finance is a strategic driver of expansion, not just reporting. You will have direct influence on major investment decisions, land acquisitions, and the financial architecture behind ambitious development plans.
