Position Summary:
GRACO is a well established privately-held organization with 60 plus years with growth plan specializing in the installation and service of HVAC, controls, and plumbing systems for large-scale commercial and high-rise construction projects. With approximately 400 employees and a reputation built on quality, safety, and operational excellence, we have become a trusted partner to some of the region's leading general contractors, developers, and owners. As we continue to expand, we are seeking an exceptional Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to help guide the organization through its next phase of growth.
The CFO will serve as a key member of the executive leadership team and provide strategic and operational financial leadership across the organization. This role is responsible for the overall financial health of the company, including financial planning and analysis, accounting, reporting, compliance, cash flow management, risk mitigation, and business strategy. The CFO will partner closely with the CEO and operational leaders to drive profitability, improve financial visibility, support decision-making, and ensure the company is well-positioned for continued success.
This is a hands-on leadership opportunity for a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) who thrives in a fast-paced construction environment and enjoys balancing strategy with execution. The ideal candidate will bring deep experience in construction or mechanical contracting, including expertise in job costing, work-in-progress (WIP) reporting, percentage-of-completion accounting, bonding, insurance, and banking relationships, and project-based financial operations. We are looking for a leader who is willing to roll up their sleeves, build strong partnerships across the business, improve processes, and help scale the organization while maintaining the financial discipline necessary to support long-term growth.
Key Responsibilities:
Financial Leadership & Strategy
- Lead all accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, fixed assets, and month-end close processes.
- Maintain compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
- Develop and improve financial reporting processes and management reporting packages.
- Monitor cash flow, working capital, and overall financial performance.
- Develop and execute the company's financial strategy to support growth and profitability objectives.
- Provide financial insight and recommendations to executive leadership.
- Participate in strategic planning, forecasting, and long-term business planning.
- Evaluate business opportunities, acquisitions, investments, and capital expenditures.
- Develop key financial metrics and dashboards that drive operational performance
Team Leadership & Development
- Lead, mentor, and develop the accounting and finance team.
- Identify opportunities to strengthen organizational capabilities and expand the accounting team as the company grows.
- Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
- Establish accountability, performance expectations, and professional development plans.
- Drive process improvements and automation initiatives.
- Build scalable systems and financial processes that support company growth.
Operational & Strategic Support
- Partner with ownership and operational leaders to support business decision-making.
- Develop and implement scalable accounting processes to support future expansion.
- Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning activities.
- Evaluate and strengthen internal controls and accounting procedures.
Accounting & Financial Reporting
- Oversee all accounting operations including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, fixed assets, and financial reporting.
- Ensure accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
- Maintain compliance with GAAP and applicable regulatory requirements.
- Lead annual audits, tax planning, and tax compliance activities.
- Establish and maintain strong internal controls.
Construction Finance & Operations
- Oversee job costing systems and project profitability reporting.
- Monitor project performance, labor productivity, equipment utilization, and overhead allocation.
- Review and analyze Work-in-Progress (WIP) schedules.
- Partner with project managers and operational leaders to identify financial risks and opportunities.
- Monitor contract performance, change orders, claims, and project cash flow.
- Develop financial models for project bidding and business planning.
Cash Flow, Banking & Risk Management
- Manage company cash flow, liquidity, and working capital.
- Maintain relationships with banks, surety providers, auditors, insurance brokers, and external advisors.
- Oversee debt management, credit facilities, and capital planning.
- Support bonding programs and ensure compliance with surety requirements.
- Lead enterprise risk management efforts.
Qualifications:
Required
- Active Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation.
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
- CFO experience of 5+ years
- Strong understanding of GAAP and financial reporting requirements.
- Experience leading and developing accounting teams.
- Experience managing accounting operations.
- Ability to operate independently with minimal oversight.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication and leadership abilities.
- Significant experience within construction, mechanical contracting, HVAC, controls, plumbing, industrial services, engineering, or related industries.
Preferred
- Experience supporting organizations with 250+ employees.
- Experience in high-growth construction environments.
- Experience with ERP systems and construction accounting software.
- Strong negotiation experience and contract understanding
